Is PE an important class?

I find it hard to believe that PE is a subject that is assessed in some schools. Is that true? If it was like that here, I'd die of fail.
Yes seeing those dough brained muscle men who think they are comic geniuses do their stupid double act as we freeze in icy weather whilst they roast in thick coats, is the perfect way to encourage children to be fit. I swear all the PE teachers I've met are trying to fulfill some kind of vengist fantasy. Always shouting and clenching fists. Once in citizenship, a PE teacher had to take our class. He apologised to us, showed us a video and then asked us to do a test. Over 6 lessons.
How they garner respect is beyond me. They all seemed to be idols to my fellow students. Ah well.

I was one of those "fit" ones in the PE class, and yeah its vital to teens more than anything.
Sure, people would sometimes pick on others (and I regret doing it to some of the less fit ones) but PE was always a fun thing to do.

It gave everyone a game to play, a chance to do something other then sit and write or read etc.

Even if we didn't learn something every session, it gave us all a chance to unwind, and just go for a run around the oval and throw balls or play hockey for an hour.

so yeah, I'd say it is important, even if you don't always learn.

I miss PE. I wish there was a mandatory PE class for all sorts of work. It relieves stress.
I agree totally.

Not to mention the aim of is to try and get kids to take up excercise on a regular basis.
Thats right people, it's healthy to have a routine of excercise.

Used to love PE. As for its importance...

I think the general idea is good: other classes pile massive amounts of homework on you so you have no time to do actual sports, or have to choose between sports and other leisurely activities. So you are given 2 or 3 hours a week for physical activity.

But the execution often fails. I don't know how it looks in other countries, but where I come from, a lot of PE teachers go through the curriculum really slowly, and sometimes are just lazy and tell people to run around for an hour. I was lucky to have a great teacher in primary and middle schools. He would go through the curriculum as fast as possible, and for the rest of the year would just ask us what we wanted to play. We ended up playing bball/handball in winter and football in summer. Fun times...

I don't know about "kids feeling left out"... If someone really is a total slob doing zero physical activity, then those few hours a week when he HAS to do something probably do him plenty of good. And I don't recall anyone being ridiculed or mocked for not doing well in PE. But that may depend on the students themselves.

For GPA it is. Heck in my high school every senior took PE (which was something usually for freshmen) because it meant a free "A" on there report card because all you had to do was dress in the schools sports outfit, do the activity and stay out of trouble. Hell I took it all 4 years in high school to get that easy "A".

But in practice it serves a purpose of geting kids up and moveing around. Plus it was the only place you could play Dodgeball.

FUCK. NO.

In my school (English secondary), PE happened once or twice a week, for one hour at a time. That's not enough to make kids active or healthy. It might debatably be enough to introduce some of them to a sport they enjoy. It is DEFINITELY enough to give anyone who's not already fit a serious complex which may well *prevent* them from ever doing anything active outside school. The only thing PE ever did for me was make me bitter and sad and, debatably, fatter because it convinced me that there was no physical activity that wasn't going to be hell on toast.

I'm a lazy fuck and I hate exercising. I performed worst (of the boys) in my class, and I still think PE is important. It should be mandatory, and consist of both indoor and outdoor activities, as well as a theoretical part.

I think that yes it should be considered important however as already said, some places make P.E compulsory and can cause hassle if you are "falling behind" in P.E such as missing lessons or not doing each activity given. This is pathetic as P.E will not be used in future years depending on what job course you are planning to take. Yes i understand that kids/teens etc need to be kept fit, but P.E isnt always the answer especially if they treat it as a COMPULSORY lesson instead of maybe trying to pass it off as being an "extra" lesson that isnt like the others as its laid back and maybe doesn't follow a routine (ie students should be aloud to choose what they do in each lesson rather then follow a set plan from the teacher)

PE should be made into a proper gym class , where to get a A you must put on muscle/lose wieght each term.

That would make it useful :)

I skipped all my PE classes back in the day (or pretended to be sick and or injured atleast). Overall, PE class is not at all important or affects your future, and I never found it intresting.....so for me, nah was not important at all.

No it is not an important class. It never lost any weight off of any fat kids I knew. And it never put any out-of-shape kids into shape. I got in shape from track and cross country, not gym class. It's a waste of time, really. Just a time for the try-hards to try hard and everyone else to watch like "Dude it's just gym class". I can think of no good things about it other than some of the activities can be fun. But since when is fun important to my education?

I think PE should remain compulsory from the starts of kinda to the end of uni and beyond. Correct me if I'm wrong but in Japan you do PE or at least morning exercise at work and the radios play morning music so all the kiddies can get in extra workout time. I think it's brilliant and should be done everywhere. But Westerners are lazy bums who don't move unless they absolutely have to so I think something like that would go over badly in this neck of the woods.

I liked it a lot, and I was quite small and weak. I guess it depends on where you live, if people there are a-holes, P.E will be awful. I had it throughout my school-years until I was 18, and now I barely get any exercise.

So yes, and do serious bullying prevention.

In my school we have to dance and do cheerleading bull in PE. And we have a class that basicly makes you do a project for a whole year that takes a shitload of time out of your hands and if you fail at it, you flunk that grade. Dno if it exists in other countries and what name it has in english.

I hated PE with a passion, mostly because of cross-country. In my case, this involved running around the same field five or six times with everybody overtaking me or lapping me until I was the only one left going and everybody was staring at me, leaving me burning with shame, rage and humiliation at my crushing failure at life. Oh yes, and the teachers would yell at me to run instead of walk, despite the fact that I had started off running and dropped down to walking because I was hopelessly unfit, awful at running, and my throat hurt so much from taking huge, desperate, gasping breaths that it felt like it was about to bleed.

Not to mention the fact that when I was bullied for an entire school year by the same bloody girl, she was in my PE class and so I had to get changed in the same changing room as her and be tormented by her smug, sickening, over-mascara'd face whilst I failed at doing running.

So yeah, PE is fine and dandy for some, but not so much for others >.>

I found it a lot of fun except when the I had to play football with the waster's or the "jock's"(I'm english so I don't know the equilivent besides what all my friend's call them which is twat's), but when you have an hour of having fun with friend's at school I find that the best part of school.

Since I live in England I pay taxes for Fatties to go to hospital or live of benefit's without any push to lose any weight. So I think P.E is a very important subject in school because it pushes them to keep active and fit, and noone should get out of that excercise because the chances that P.E is the only excercise the fat kid's get is pretty damn high.

Dunno what PE is like in the states but in England at my school it was a once a week double period occurence. Depending on the season we did different things. Autumn was Rugby, Winter was Cross Country (ahh the pain), Spring was Rugby for the team players and assorted sports for everyone else (Hockey, Football etc) followed finally by summer which was dedicated to Athletics. Within this overall plan there was a rotating three week stint in a local indoor fitness centre where you could do either Badminton or a gym workout (this indoor stuff was only at year 10/11 and sixth form).

That was all good times, whether up on the field or in the centre. The only drag was Cross Country, man that sucked. It was winter so the fields were less field like and more bog like and the school didn't want them absolutetely annihilated over winter so they'd still be playable for Rugby matches. So we ran around the edge of the field, off the field to a local park, which we ran around, then ran back to our field, which we ran around again, then we got changed, and died. I think it was between three and four miles, good memories.

Finally, we also had PE theory, which taught us some applicable and extra specific Biology and the merits of a healthy lifestyle.

PS Apparently I've said alot about PE. If you've read it all have a +1 internet. If you've just read this post script and try to claim the +1 you, in fact, get -10. Moral of the story, put some effort in! (applies to PE too)
