i liked Red Alert 2 when it came out for PC and still think that it is the best RTS out there for any system. when the 360 came out with a Lord of the rings RTS i thought that it wsa going to be a good game. i rented the game to see how it helled up. I felt like Yahtzee reviewing a Sonic game. It was so bad. But some people may argue that a console RTS is a good idea and the games for it are really good. I just dont feel that a RTS should be played on a 360, PS3 or the Wii. do you people agree that RTS's should stick to were they are bound to be the best at? the PC.

Probably not. The Halo Wars is probably about as good as you will get in terms of streamlined control.

The issue isn't that a console *can't* do RTS, it's really control issues. There's only so much that you can do with the limited number of buttons on a standard controller.

Unless you start packaging it with it's own controller, then you gotta ask how well that kinda thing worked for Steel Battalion... lol

It could be good. If the game comes with a keyboard and mouse you can plug into the console to play with it. Otherwise, not so much. Using a gamepad is just way to limiting for that type of game.

PC will always be the platform of choice for RTS's.

I'm surprised no one has even mentioned this, but I RTS for the wii could be better off than for the other consoles due to the fact that the wii remote can, and is used as a mouse

The Wii might actually work for an RTS if you used the nunchuck as well. However, I doubt it would be able to handle it.

Other then that RTSs should stick to PCs.

another problem is it seems that more and more RTS's are coming only for the consoles. why is that?

Because apparently developers think that the console crowd is bigger than the PC crowd (which is probably true), however, how many console players like/have the attention span to be playing RTS' when they could be blowing shit up instantly in Halo 3 or Call of Duty.

Prevents piracy, larger user base, etc.

Off the top of my head? Halo Wars solved the controller issue by making the bases easier to manage, cutting out resource management, and basically hooked the standard RTS up to a fire hose to keep it entertaining.

The problem they aren't addressing is that consoles are bad for RTS games as soon as you have too many units running around. Like Deam's review said, when you have 8 ways to select units on your controller you need to go back to the drawing board. An RTS that is more squad based might work better on a console.

No. Real RTS's have too many keys for a console. RTS's have always meant to for PC's and I haven't seen one console RTS to disprove me.

I am not to worried about it. All the RTS's that are coming out this year (that I care about) are all on the PC. Named DoW2 which is excellent, and Starcraft 2 if it comes out this year. I have also been playing a lot of Company of Heroes lately, which is also excellent. I wouldn't worry to much about it, as all the good RTS's are heading for the PC.

EndWar. Tom Clancy game. Anyone try that?
I agree. Endwar is the best console RTS so far, all the other console RTSs are honestly horrible by comparison, even Halo Wars. I know that sounds extremely bias but if you play it you'll agree.

Hmm...not sure if I would want to/can raise my arm pointing at the screen for the amount of time it takes to play a round of supreme commander.

Actually there was a lineup reel in October that showed what I believe to be Lost magic for Wii which is an RTS, but obviously I don't know if it was a good game or not on account of no time machines.

I'm sorry, but the extreme hyperbole gamers use when describing console RTSs is beginning to grate on me. Its not rocket science people.

I got C&C3 for my 360 for Christmas from my brother, and while I wasn't thrilled at the time, I found that it controlled perfectly fine and was a lot of fun. The only problems it had were technical ones (framerate got choppy at times, especially when you had a lot of the flamethrower guys).

This. C&C3 is by far my favorite control system for an RTS on a console, it lets you have a ton of control and if you invest a little time in it you can be able to use it sooo fast. i love it.

Did they carry over the Tiberium Wars control map over to Kane's Wrath? Anybody know this?

halo wars is alright, my issue is more with the basic gameplay than the control

No.
"Endwar" wasn't a neccisarily a disappointment (as I've come to realize the fact that a good, original game with the name "Tom Clancy" attatched is a myth) but I've come to terms with how miserable console RTSs are, "Halo Wars" included.
Simplifying the micro-managing takes away from the overall experience, as the sheer prospect of a "simple" RTS almost defeats the premise entirely. The only aspect of the genre that takes skill is managing your resources while still maintaining a military dominance. I've yet to enjoy a single port of an RTS to consoles and the mere thought that console RTSs could become the norm makes me want the genre to die out entirely.

CPU and RAM are not the console's strong points, at least not a few years after the console has been released. So, RTS games should indeed stick to the PC. Just look at the TBS Civ series going for the consoles... I'm thinking of Civ Revolutions here, it feels like a totally stripped down version of civ, the soul is still there, but they've left nothing else with it when they ported it.

It would however be very nice to see this new generation of none base building, action based RTS games going across to the consoles. I'm thinking of games like World in Conflict and Dawn of War II here. Looking at the direction Tales of Valour expansion pack is likely to take for the Company of Heroes series, it is likely they'll make a console version of CoH II which focuses on individual squad control and has no base building or map based resource gathering at all. You heard it here first ;).
