Is Scott Pilgrim (Movie Version) Evil?

So I was watching Scott Pilgrim vs. The World the other day with the commentary and they were discussing how Scott had this potential to be an evil-ex all the time. Yet when you watch the end of the movie (Spoiler Alert)Scott really does come off as kind of evil anyway. So let's look at the first battle ast the Chaos Theatre. Scott rushes in kills like twenty guys and then tries to kill Gideon. But at the time the whole evil-exes thing was over and Ramona had supposedly gone with Gideon of her own free will. The next time he goes back he says that he isn't even fighting for Ramona, he's fighting for himself, this time killing four more people than he did before. So what if he learned how to be a better boyfriend if he got transformed into a murderer? So is Scott Pilgrim evil?

I am glad this movie failed on a financial level. It has geekdowm written all over it, and not the pleasant kind. It has the incorrect, backwards notion of what makes being a nerd cool all over it.

Is he really a murderer though? He has a flaming sword and they burst into a shower of coins. I think you're taking the 'killing' part a bit too literally.

The thing is, The league of evil exes was a construction of Gideon's. He was the evil one - Scott was just pissed off.

In his first attack, he was still trying to win Ramona over and defeat Gideon out of a feeling of obligation and anger - that was the point of why he lost.

On his second attempt he was doing it for himeslf in the sense that he was bringing closure to that chapret of his life - Defeating Gideon wasn't about winning Ramona back at that point, it was about conquoring the demons that had been plaguing him - and freeing Ramona from him. The whole movie (and comic series) was about Scott learning how to be an adult, and how he should take responsibility and find a place of his own in the world, instead fo just coasting along.

That final scene represented him finally coming to terms with that - It wasn't just about him. It was about setting ramona free, accepting that he'd been holding Sex Bob-omb back, and about becoming a hero in his own way. It represented his changing priorites, and the culmination of his change in character, from schmuck loser inde kid to adult.

I know I'm going to get crap for this... but I agree.

I too am happy it failed financially. At least then, I won't have to listen to too many people hail it as "the greatest movie ever"

This assessment makes me facepalm.

On it's surface? maybe - but the movie (and comics) spends so much time framing Scott as a dead-ending loser in a shitty band who thinks he's 10x more awesome than he actually is, and is, as a result, really genuinely unlikable that anything more than a superficial glance at the film should indicate that the negatives of geekdom are treated very much as character liabilities.

The movie takes potshots at geekdom, the indie scene, veganism, and kinda subverts the type of story it's telling. it's full of flawed, imperfect characters, and while it frames itself like a videogame, it had a lot to say about that kind of lifestyle.

So to assess it as making the bad parts of being a nerd look cool - it's doesn't - it makes the bad parts of being a nerd look bad - the film is about moving past that.

Naw, he's just like that when he's pissed off. I mean, come on. When he's not ready to slash multiple people apart with a flaming sword (twice) out of rage, he's calm and not evil.

He's not evil, but he's kind of a jerk. THAT'S THE POINT. By the end, he's realised that and actually makes an effort to correct his mistakes instead of ignoring them. (Compare his attitude to Knives and Kim before the 4th fight and in the climax)

And if that guy who claims it targetted hipsters turns up here too I WILL punch him.

It's an extermely entaining movie, in that respect it's my favriote movie.

As a work of art, as in conveying emotion and dpeth? it's not that good.

It's not even that I'm looking for depth or emotion. I'm just looking for good story or something entertaining.

In my opinion, I wasn't entertained. A bunch of bright lights, annoying characters and video game references isn't enough for me to think it's a good movie.

That's not to say that I think anyone who likes it is an idiot. I can see why people like it. It's just not for me.

I would think it is because Gideon took Ramona back from Scott and he was pissed. And Gideon provoked him anyway when he called Scott.

Either way, the comic is about 3x better at establishing Scott so it makes more sense.

Gideon was an ass and in my opinion he deserved it. Besides, Scott didn't really kill all of those guys. When he was "reentering" the Chaos Theater he just told that one guy that his hair was stupid and the guy burst into coins.

Anyway I think you're looking at it too seriously.
