I don't understand people who say that franchises like the Legend of Zelda, Mario, and Metroid need to die. Take Zelda for instance. It's an adventure game with continually interesting spatial awareness puzzles. That's all. LoZ is just basically a brand name saying that "this game will be very good." Same with Mario, only it's saying "this platformer will be very good"

You know why Nintendo uses the same characters over and over? Because if they don't, nobody buys the damn game. Remember Zack and Wiki? Excellent game, but nobody bought it because it was different. Nintendo has absolutely no motivation to make different characters, when they can take the same cash cows and give them expansion packs.

And you know what? I don't mind it. Games aren't books, and do not need to possess a thought-provoking, original story. They are, at best, an interesting distraction from real life. I've never been moved by the story of a video game, and likely never will be.
All I can say is that I agree. Fully.

I hope not. I don't want Link in space.

At least, not as the central setting of the game. Link's been on the moon before. I just don't want him wearing a space suit and fighting aliens with an arm cannon, ya know?

Why not? The first thing that comes to mind is Mario galaxy breed it with Wind wanker...er...waker.... (sorrry I hate the sea fairing bits of wind waker).

Another way to do it is just separate each race/environment into its own planet...but I still prefer fantasy elements like if you go with planet spheres on a large Drak crystal inspired planetarium, its the hub of all the worlds and you have to find codes and parts to be able to shift things around to where you can touch to warp to them.

Well, I could see it being done actually, though I am not the world's biggest "Zelda" fan.

My thought process is sort of like this:

Waaay back in the past of the 1990s when you couldn't cross the street without risking being stepped on by a T-rex there was this Anime series being released in the US Called "The Slayers" which was a sword and sorcery satire that had a tendency to go from absurdist comedy to deadpan serious (while remaining internally consistant). It last for like four seasons and spawned several OVA series and games (the games of which were never given a US release to my knowlege).

Pretty much upon it's end, the series was relaunched TWICE in single season science fiction forms.

One of course which is the (in)famous "Trigun" where many of the characters/designs are directly taken from The Slayers as are a number of key plot elements. There is even an episode where as a joke the have Vash (Gourrey) dealing with a 15 year old Lina who is nothing special within that paticular universe. However if you watch pretty much all of the Slayers characters have incarnations and there are plenty of in-jokes connected to it. The brief bit with "Lina" simply being the most overt. Many do not realize the connection as there are fanatic Trigun fans who have never seen "The Slayers".

The other of which is "Lost Universe" which despite being one of MY personal favorite animes was nowhere near as successful as Trigun (at least in the US). Lost Universe again uses incarnations of many of the slayer's characters, includes series referances (including the statue remnants of a specific troll-creature in an auction house), a "Psi-Blade" that looks suspiciously like Gorrunnova, the names of various entities from The slayers (Volfield, etc...), and of course a group of ultra powerful "Lost Ships" which have abillities very similar to the legendary weapons in the final Slayers series.

Of course none of these are directly connected, they are all individual universes without any direct interaction which are sharing certain concepts/roles/and re-envisioned characters, along with some in-jokes that only make sense if you've watched a lot of stuff more or less by the same guys.

Something similar could be done with Zelda, there are enough recurring themes and characters where they could take the same basic elements, and build a science fiction universe out of them. Ironically it should be noted that in the Sci-Fi universes the equivilent of the protaganist of the Slayers "Lina Inverse" is usually given a supporting role (if she is directly there at all), and the hero is her sidekick who was known as Gourrey Gabriev in the slayers series (a point they beat slayers over the head with in Trigun, as during the 'Lina' bit he has his hair down making it quite clear that it's
pretty much the same exact character model).

It could be amusing to see some role changes and such as well (which would be especially amusing to long time players). Like say having Zelda rescue Link for a change.

Just my (long and rambling) thoughts.

Of course not! I don't like the idea either, but it is a possibility.
A possibility that should be taken out back and thrown in a wood chipper.

Thou shall not be a sellout! IF... god help me, IF they make a space Zelda then they are shi**ing on every fan of the games! how the heck is Link even supposed to survive up there?!
a space suit? how would he get there? in a spaceship? last time I checked that sort of tech didn't find place in a Zelda game!

Yes. Why?

Sci-Fi Fantasy isn't that bad of a genre.

Why else?

Because they can milk the series more.

Think about this: Zelda's core story has usually been the quest for some series of ancient artifacts of great power to deal with a guy who also wants these ancient relics for his own nefarious ends. Setting it in a science-fiction setting doesn't really seem like a stretch to me and it wouldn't be the first time something like this has happened and actually been successful...

*scratches head with the corner of his copy of Mass Effect*

...sorry, lost my train of thought there.

And some of you so far have been neglecting that science-fiction and anachronisms (such as swords) CAN in fact mix given the right circumstances. Perhaps lasers and energy weapons were powered by a said mystic artifact and this artifact was destroyed, forcing everyone back to the stone ages of technology? Maybe the Master Sword is all this Link The Road Warrior has at his disposal now that his laser rifle stopped working? All of his tools and gadgets for getting around and solving puzzles are actually better explained in a sci-fi setting anyway!

Look a little further back in time to retro pulp fiction sci-fi; it was all about adventure (the Zelda series' genre) IN SPACE. Oh, and how many Zelda fans also like Star Wars? Same concept of larger-than-life heroes on a quest, the traditional epic storyline, just IN SPACE.

Yes, I think it's a possibility in the sense that it could be a good title (since this thread's title was a little ambiguous). I am hopeful if for no other reason than to see all the purists cry and whine as their precious series gets reincarnated with the same old tired and true approach to the plot, just with jumpsuits and motorcycles instead of tunics and horses. Plus, to see all the cynics who look down their nose at Nintendo (the "they're milking it" crowd; as if Nintendo gives a damn what you think of them - come to think of it, wouldn't it be MORE suspicious if they weren't "milking it"?) find themselves seriously considering playing it.

Well, the 'milking it' argument, or thought, usually comes from them re-using ridiculous amounts of material. That would be fine if they were just sequels, but how many times have the games followed the same story arcs? Zelda and Gannondwarf, or peach and browser. The weapons, items, battle sequences, are usually very almost completely the same.

I agree with you. The Zelda series, as well as the other Nintendo faves, remain similar because that is what people want. It is what people buy. People fear changes in the Zelda series, Zelda 2 and Wind Waker proved that much. Both were good games, but people immediately thought, "Side-Scrolling? Sailing? TEH GAEY!".

I enjoy Nintendo's games, regardless of whether they change or not, because, you know what? It's still fun.
Ahhh some people are speaking sense finally :)

Agreed - though I admit I have found several in-game stories very compelling in the past (Think Silent Hill, Fallout(s), Gothic, Syberia, Dreamfall etc.)

I also thought Mario Galaxy was an incredible game. Just putting that out there.

All these people hating on Mario and Nintendo, they'd do well to remember that gaming is where it's at today because of Nintendo.
I feel a majority of people just jump on the bandwagon when it comes to Nintendo-rage.

I think this topic made me die a little on the inside...

Next thing you know you'll be talking about hi-jacking space frigates with "Epona" on the side; with the hookshot and the Space-age bow *coughlaser*

Hm I wonder what musical instrument you'd have, a harmonica, an airguitar?
