So I was watching Lost today from some unknown reason. And on this episode, a character picks up a hitch-hiker. A few seconds later, he gets pulled over, blah blah conspiracy blah, a cop pulls him over and finds guns in the back. The cop takes a very brief look over some forms of the guns, then claims that he could still take the guy in for picking up a hitch-hiker. And so I naturally thought "What the wtf? Is picking up a hitch-hiker illegal in the US?"

Is it? And if so, why?

As for more discussion value, what laws have you found out about other countries that you didn't know? Another example, it is illegal to kill a possum in Australia, yet here where I live in New Zealand it is considered almost mandatory short of illegal not to.

anyway in Australia foxes are killed because they are introduced, which made cartoons and storys I watched as a kid that had foxes as the main charachters...well interesting since I was under the impression fox's were "bad" animals

anyway I think it would be illigal because they would want to discourage hitchikign because of safty reasons

I think it is illegal to do so in certain states. I'm not sure why, though, hitch-hikers I've picked up were pretty cool.

And random illegal stuff? I know all London taxis are still technically supposed to have a bale of hay to feed the horses that pull them. Yeah, we still haven't got rid of that.

It's illegal in some places within the United States. It mostly depends on the municipal government in that area. Safety is the primary concern. Also it's illegal on most major highways in both the United States and Canada. I've had a police officer pull over and ask me not to put my thumb out in the usual hitchhiking gesture because it's illegal where I live (in Canada).
