Cool is very much the wrong word. If I could think of a better adjective then i will tell you. He is more...symbollic? No...

The comedian is a symbol for humanity and it's basically savage nature.
He also looks cool when lighting a cigar with a flame thrower in the movie.
However overall he comes across rather neutral as he dose both admirable and disgusting things.
So yeah I don't think he's "cool" but he is certainly an interesting character.

Awesome in a completely amoral way. I know some people love that kind of thing. As for me, I think gooch said it best. He's representative of the dark side of humanity, and I can't really see it in a bad or good way.

It was attempted rape, and then he hit on his own daughter. Ick. He was not cool, and it's no wonder Rohrshach had a hard time finding the killer, since it was a very long list of suspects. Ozy was possibly the only one without a high agenda on the Comedian's life. His purpose was more of practicality.

I am lead to believe that the person who shot JFK was no the Comedian, but you see the person tied to a poll in the opening montage

Trust me, you and I are in full agreement, except for the "be shot" part.
I can think of better punishments.

Some of them involve urethras.
And needles.
And vats of acid.
