I've just been thinking this a lot recently while playing, do we no longer play games just for fun? When i was 10 every little thing would fill me with excitement but nowadays fun seems like the thing i take least notice off. In ME2 i got immersed in the story, Uncharted 2 the cinematic indiana jones feel and environments and in Amnesia the dark descent the massive amounts of adrenaline whenever a small sound scared the crap out of me kept me going. Does anyone else feel like this?

Are you enjoying immersing yourself in ME2's story? Or getting scared by the darkness in Amnesia? If so, then I'd say you're still playing for fun. You're just getting the fun a different way.

yes and no.games nowadays are becoming more of an entertainment medium than a plaything, but thats not to say that all games are like that.

I enjoy playing games with my friends and I enjoy playing games that challenge my sneakyness and ability to come up with new and interesting ways of dealing with problems. This is fun to me. If a game won't let me play with my friends and won't let me add my personal touch to the game, I usually won't play it =3.

I couldn't get into Mass Effect, I think maybe because those games take themselves very seriously. It's a problem I have with quite a few games. Some rather serious games I can get into, but then that game must have a story that really speaks to me, like Mafia II (a game that also allowed me to put a little dash of myself into it ^^).

I had fun playing the Witcher. It's a great feeling going through a dialog and knowing eventually there's going to be an option that will cause all hell to break lose.

The way you worded this made this rather interesting. I would argue since you're becoming immersed in the story, and feeling the raw emotions that the game wants you to feel, then you are enjoying the experience and having fun.

The same could be said for films. Rarely would you describe watching a movie as "fun" but you get engrossed in the stories and characters and have an enjoyable time doing so. Games are still fun, we're just experiencing it differently than we used to.

Video games are not just games anymore, they are experiences.

things are-a-changin' Fun takes on many forms, and looking through nostalgia goggles can make everything nowadays seem a little odd...

Here's my take on it, I love platformers and RPG's, so you know that one modern platformer you love? Super Mario Galaxy, New Super mario bros., LBP, Assassins Creed.

Theres your simple fun.

the rest is a complex mishmash, but distill it down to basics and you get the platformer, thats where you go for your "Ahahahahah" fun feel

at least in my book.

Heh. Other people may compete. I have fun. That's what's important.

But other people get fun out of competing so they are also having fun.

When you first create a profile for the 360 it asks basically whether you play casually or play to win. I like this idea a lot because it means that you should end up playing with people of a similar mindset to yourself in online games. The reason I say "idea" and not "function" is because it never seems to work that way.

If my gaming system has to ask me something like that, it doesn't REALLY want to know.

But to get on topic more, I feel that having fun can be competitive, but competing is not necessarily fun. Fairly certain the OP is talking about people who are doing it to rack up their kills, their wins, and their friggin' teabaggings. To which, I believe that doesn't equal having fun, because every time you lose it's a cuss-fest, rage-quit, and break-the-controller. Fun is when you don't give a shit about losing too. At least, that's what I think of it. Guaranteed though, I AM having fun.

A little, I'm not gaining as much fun with games as much as I'm just being entertained, or enraptured by the story and setting.
Though when I look to alleviate those feelings I just play a Nintendo game, they have very little or practically no story at all, the only thing they have going for them is fun.

I think the reasons you play games changes as you get older. At first it's just for fun, later, because they're cool, and finally, because what else are you gonna do with all those free hours away from work/family/life?
