Is the new Mortal Kombat worth the money?

I'm considering buying the new Mortal Kombat this coming Saturday but before I do, I was wondering if it is actually worth the money. I have no intention of doing any of the online multiplayer, and it's doubtful that I'll do much in person multiplayer, so I'll be playing the single player part almost exclusively.
Before I go and spend my hard earned money (yay that I have a job again!) I want to know if I'd be better off renting it from Blockbuster and spending my money on other games. And if Mortal Kombat is a renter rather than a buyer, can you suggest some good to decent games that I can buy instead?
P.S.- I have no desire to buy L.A. Noire as I prefer to be on the criminal side (usually as a mass-murdering psychopath) of the justice system in games, so please don't suggest that game.

From what I've heard the single player campaign is very well done, although you may find yourself spamming cheap tactics in some fights. The longevity would be in multiplayer, though. Go for the rental.

Including more info on what consoles you have would help. I'd reccommend the new Fallouts, the Mass Effect series, and Red Dead (But you likely already have it).

Whether or not to buy mk9 I cannot answer as your tastes=/= mine.

But even the most biased critic would agree that there is a lot of content in mk9, you won't get more features or extras in most current fighting games.
Online is where most ppl say mk9 falls short, for various reasons, but in your case this doesn't seem to be a problem so if you're looking for a current gen fighter with plenty of meat in it, then it's a good purchase. Bigger question is if you like mks style of fighting and have fun playing it (as opposed the fighting systems in say...soul calibur or tekken).

Renting it first to try it out is also a good idea, so you know if game is fun for you.

Ohhhhhhhhh yes. Then again, I grew up playing MK in the arcades, so I'm a little biased.

As for the non-biased stuff, there is tons to do in the games. There are 300 individual challenges that range from "Why did they bother making this a challenge?" to "Holy shit, as soon as all of these expletives leave my mouth at the loudest volume I can possibly muster, I'm going to snap the controller in half, shove my foot through my television, set fire to my console, and destroy all of the furniture in my domicile." The single player campaign has a semi-retarded story, but there is a large amount of it. You may be able to make it through in a single day; I'm not sure.

I said the same thing about multiplayer. I tried it out last night, and it's pretty entertaining. If you were a fan on MK 1-3, you'd love this. If not, you might as well pass; it's pretty much the same thing.

I've got a 360. And I've played New Vegas, minus the DLC that I have no intention of buying or playing, to death (I played it eight or nine times, start to finish, with thirty to thirty two hours of game play per character). I have also played Red Dead though didn't finish it, I never really got into it and ended up skipping most of the cutscenes). I have played, finished and somewhat enjoyed Mass Effect one, and have yet to pick up 2 or 3.

I mostky enjoy FPS games, and a few adventure/RPG style games (Ninja Gaiden II, God of War etc.)

I'm getting a tattoo of Scorpion and Subzero fighting on my back. That is my answer.

Although I enjoy online play I bought this game for the single player and I was not disappointed at all. Ive always been a fan of Mortal Kombat games but the control has always bugged me to the point were I would pass on past titles to buy but not to rent. I was surprised at the level of detail to the awesome new controls they put into the game. My friend, don't pass this one up, worth a buy all the way.

It's probably worth getting into if you were never a part of the MK scene that started it all and you want to touch base with its roots. I'm not really sure I want to, personally.

It certainly looks worthwhile. I'm seriously considering importing it at this stage.

If you're into that sorta thing.

I'd personally consider it a 30-dollar game at most, but that's just my tastes.

It's certainly one of the more interesting and fun fighting games (and games in general) I've played in a while, and it's certainly nice to have Mortal Kombat stop being shit, so if you like MK, go for it.

Pfft. I would buy it, but the new MK is the first game where I actually play it online. Until it came out, I still would play Deception AND MK Trilogy (which is essentially what this game is a reboot of)

Seeing as how the single player gameplay lasts longer than alot of "normal" games, I'd say yes, IF you enjoy fighting games. I've had great fun with it for many hours while barely touching the multiplayer.

Yea even without multiplayer, theres hidden fights for you to find, The Story Mode, The challenge Tower (300 Missions) the Krypt theres serious alot to do even before you go online. This is probably the most ridiculous game to Platinum/1000G.

I, too, am biased as I've always loved the series.

Fighting is a little faster than it used to be, a lot smoother too. The moves are generally as easy as ever to pull off and fatalities have been made slightly easier to do (I say that, but it could just be I'm a lot better at these games than I used to be as a kid and thus can actually pull them off nowadays).

The story mode is RATHER difficult. I managed to only get just under half way through before having to lower the difficulty because of how recklessly over-powered it becomes. If you're a fan of the series though, you're in for a treat with the story as it gives away a lot of little tidbits of info that's never been shared before. (When you reach chapter 3, you'll see what I mean). As robobengt said, the story IS a lot longer than many single-player games now... though a good portion of that is losing multiple times to the totally unfair matches. It starts off easy enough, but when you get to chapter 3 onwards, you start facing 1-on-2 matches and later you face boss characters that seemingly block most of your attacks. It gets very unfair and unforgiving. Very satisfying when you win though :p

Personally, I've not played online because I don't have a wifi connection, but also because I don't like playing against other players I don't know. Call me a sore loser, but when someone kicks your ass within 5 seconds of the match because they play and practice the game every minute of the day... it's disheartening. I'm just a casual player myself.

Hope that helps.

Go for Rental. I'm sure it's fun to play and the story is alright but I personally think fighting games are designed for multiplayer. Not online though. If you bring your friends around a lot, then it'll probably be worth your cash.
