I was looking up DVD's sold outside the us through Amazon and came across a Top Gear special I just wanted instantly, however it says right there in the description it locked to Region2 and I live in Region1.

I was about to give up until I remembered that I watch DVD's exclusively on my game consoles not a DVD player, so I looked it up and keep coming across conflicting information about the PS3, some say it is locked and others say it isn't, and I wondered, we have a rather international group on this site, has anyone tried playing a Region 2 DVD in a Region 1 PS3 and did it work.

It is a older PS3 not the new slim one.

Weeeell, I had a similar problem before, and the dvd worked on my dvd player, but not the PS3.

So I would say so, yes.

From what I know, PS3s are region locked, but the games are region free. So you could play games from any country, but not DVDs. I hope I am wrong, for your sake though, as Top Gear is top-notch :D

Yeah this is the case.

Kind of annoying to be honest. Never saw the point of it.

Couldn't you just play it on a computer? I'm sure there's a program somewhere that allows you to play Region 2 DVD's on a computer that isn't supposed to.

Or, the legally grayer area, you could buy the DVD, and then torrent the episodes. You already have the DVD, so it isn't bad. I wouldn't blame you for it.
I think you can get around it by copying the DVD with your computer, but I don't think my computer is capable of that it could play the DVD itself I never tried.
