So, yeah, neediness to say...SPOILERS.

To start:
River Song, real name - Melody Pond.

Daughter of Rory & Amy Pond.

Kidnapped by 'evil dudes who hate The Doctor and want to make her into a Time Lord because 'The Doctor' is one of the fiercest WARRIORS in all of time and space...
O, and to kill him.

When The Doctor first meets her she dies for him.
When she first meets The Doctor (as an adult) she losing all her remaining regenerations to save his life after she poisoned him.

Yeah...
O, and River Song's mother met The Doctor as a little girl and waited some 20+ years for him to come back for her.
She also had, maybe, a kind of crush on The Doctor which she showed him on the night before her wedding...but it went nowhere.

Rory Pond "died" at least two times, because of he was traveling with The Doctor.

Amy AND Rory seem to 'accept' that, because of their relationship with The Doctor, their FIRST BORN (DAUGHTER) was stolen from them.
Sure, they were able to 'sort of' raise her, by being her friend through their childhood...
But that's what makes it even MORE screwed up.

I don't know about anyone else...
But while I like the CHARACTER/actress, the whole timeline for River Song is kind of frecked.

Well I for one agree with you. I hate River with the fury of a thousand suns the character is so fucking annoying and the whole dame story line is so contrived and completely ridiculous that it ruins the show for me. I think I could have dealt with it had it not been for Matt Smith being such a shit Doctor.

While I'm no fan of it (because honestly like the Doctor needed more people to be in love with him), I think it gets more shit than it deserves.
But I do still think it was pretty silly and I kinda hope that we can move past it now.

It could have been handled well....but Moffat seems to fall in love with ideas and hamfists the execution.

I pretty much just ignored the arc in the show and stopped watching

Yeah I think the story is pretty messed up at this point.
There's so many blaring contradictions he's made since the other writers have left, I feel like the doctor who universe had completely changed.
One would be river saying (on her first appearance with Tennant) "you're the youngest I've ever seen you" or something like that, then they bring in a younger doctor and reveal all her back story with him.
They could have handled the story better, much better. Oh well, I stopped watching Doctor Who after that arc, things just got too abstract for me to wrap my head around.

Woo, first post! Do I really like or enjoy the arc? No, not really. Does it reach TWILIGHT level? No, not even close. Those books have horrible, horrible messages that I truly believe are harmful to the human race (especially their target audience), and the writing is some of the most awful I've ever read. The whole River Song thing is just a little silly/cheesy. A little annoying but bearable.

Welcome to the Escapist! I quite enjoy your avatar. :D

Anyways, I've never seen an episode in which River Song was the companion (Except Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead), but that whole thing sounds incredibly hard to follow.

That sounds like some crazy, convoluted timey-wimey shenanigans.

Par for the course in Doctor Who.

I didn't care for River Song as a character to begin with and her whole backstory just pushed her from unlikable but tolerable into full Mary-Sue level.
She's daughter of two companions who is destined to be the Doctor's one true love but she's also a super soldier trained by his most ancient and dangerous enemy (who we have never even heard of prior up to this point) and she has innate Time Lord-like abilities because she was concieved in the TARDIS (even though that's not how Time Lords work) and her love for the Doctor is so pure that it not only overrides decades of indoctrination and mind control but also nearly destroys the universe.
Fuck River Song. Fuck that entire stupid storyline. Fuck Moffat for thinking it was a good idea in the first place.

And she's not going to be in the new series much. Her arc is doen with, she'll just occasionally appear.

September 1st can't come fast enough...

I liked it. It was complex, weird and bat-shit crazy, which is exactly what I enjoy from Doctor Who.

Well I hate River Song. She worked for the first two episodes she was in but the more I see of her the more I hate her. Having a character that knows everything about the Doctor takes alot out of the show. The whole point of the Doctor is he is a mystery. Having the odd character who is as smart as him works sometimes, especially if they are the bad guy (The Master, Davros), but not all the bloody time. And the whole romance thing is just beyond shit.

But then ever since Moffat took over the show I think it has been unbelievably boring anyway. I dislike Matt Smith as the Doctor and I have never understood all the fanboy love that Moffat has. I like Captain Jack and I liked Blink. Everything elese he has done has bored the crap out of me. Moffat can write good episodes but he cannot do a whole series for shit. His pacing is off. At this point I watch Doctor Who because it is something to do and I have a vague hope that it will improve again. 2 series and 2 christmas specials have done nothing to change my mind.

I like the story, not so much the character.
I think the idea of introducing her with the part where she dies for the Doctor was pretty clever, slowly having her know less and less about him as we follow the Doctor's point of view rather than hers. The whole arc is clever.
The character I find annoying. Not sure why, can't put my finger on it.

I've always liked River Song even from the first time we saw her("Silence in the Libary/Forest of the Dead"). As for the story arc itself I can see how people might not like because it might get confusing after awhile but once you connect all the dots it's fine.

The entire story seems like they made it up as they went along instead of having it planned out, the ending of the last series was so excruciatingly bad that I am no longer going to watch the show. I mean it has been bad ever since the Catherine Tate season but at least there were some great episodes, now there is nothing.
