It's March Mayhem guys. The site is seriously overtaxed with all the new people. Happened last year too, if memory serves. Give it a few days.
I say we banish new members >:D OT: Blame it on ZP.

Aside from my posts sometimes not going through, videos are now claiming broken links, more than half the ones I tried.

I Didn't really notice, except for the site going down for a few minutes when the March Mayhem polls went active

Although my account randomly signing out at the drop of a hat is as annoying as always.

But you know, it happens. Just Do something else Pray to the Almighty Ultrajoe, Neonbob, and VaudeVilleVeteran for this blight on our fair Escapist to end

Yeah, I've been noticing some slow loads and bugs. I've written it off to the huge surge of traffic as the collective communities of 64 developers all rush in to vote.

I'm going to quote this intelligent person so that if the next poster just scrolls to the bottom and doesn't read any of the posts that they'll see this above the reply box.

I actually made an account just for March Mayhem last year, so I'm not allowed to be mad at the new users. Chances are few of them will hang around, and those who do will become valid community members.

I don't see it. I look at the home page, and I just see one thing for March Madness. You mean to tell me that one thing is causing the site to have all of these problems? Sounds kinda unreasonable.
Well, this "one thing" has a bunch of threads in their <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/index/532-The-Escapists-2010-March-Mayhem>own section of the forum, and as Orannis noted, lots of people hear about this competition from sources, and flood into the site as new users, thus increasing traffic.
This extra traffic messes with the site.

Still confused?

I think the taint of chaos is attemping to overtake it, and its fighting back as hard as it can

really, sometimes I've noticed the escapist pretttttty much just sneezes and things lock up, messages are gone, threads are gone. then come back in a hour -POW there they are
BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!

*coughs and clears his throat*

What I meant to say is I'm pretty sure it's the March Madness stuff that's going on right now, it's just really messing up the servers and everything. In a few days all shall be back to normal till next march. I'm just glad to know I'm not the only one having these kind of problems.

If I can get the blasted forum page to load, I'll let you know....

YES! It worked. OK....Looks like there is quite a bit going on there. But why flock here? Is this a big deal?

FOR THE GREATER GOOD!

Anyways.....What is it about this that is so great? Is there more to it than what I initially see?

Well, I think it's just a thing for the developers to take some kind of pride in, and it might be unique to this site. I'm not sure about that last part.
But I believe that the developers' sites are allowed to advertise the contest, so their fanbase, if so inclined, will show up to vote in the contest.

So.....

What we really got going on here is Fanboy Bait. Except for developers. So, developer bait. I do think it is unique to this site though. Perhaps that has something to do with it. Thank you very much for clearing that up!

The forum's messed up for me a couple of times before, but it's cleared itself up, from what I can tell. I just think the site goes boom sometimes and needs a bit of maintenance like any other site.

Probably something cuased by all the traffic to the site.

Might wear down toward the end of March Madness...

Is March Mayhem really that big of an event? I didn't really think that people beyond the Escapist cared, or even paid attention, to it. (Not that I don't love it.)

Yesterday was the worst, it took forever to load games, someone made a quintuple post, the site crashed twice. Lets just say I wasn't on long yesterday

Yes, this also happens to me. What the nelly?

And if it's March Mayhem - is extra traffic worth the site-breaking overload? A question to ponder.

It's march mayhem people, the same thing happened last year. People hear about it on the internet and come on in waves of new users flooding the site and causing a small overload. Things will be fine in a few days while the Escapist adjusts to the new flow of traffic.

I was figuring that's what was causing the issues. I'm just giving the escapist time to breathe for a while.

There was a combination of forum traffic and the bracket voting script that hammered the database servers significantly more then normal. And when the database goes, everything else lags behind it.

We made a bunch of fixes all over to streamline various caches/etc, so things should be better. And we'll keep tweaking things until it's even faster. ;)
