Is the Washington DLC for AC3 relevant to the main story?

So AC4 have been out for awhile and most people including my friends have said that it's good so I'm thinking of getting back into the series. That means first getting AC3 since I want to play through the entire story.

My question then is: is the Washington DLC, being alternate history, part of the main story of Connor and/or Desmond or does it at least add something to it? Is it worth buying anyway?

Since I'm mainly getting AC3 for the story I'd like to avoid making an unneccessary purchase if possible.

Not very relevant to the story, but if you want to play with superpowers, go with it. AC3's story on paper is fine. However, execution was the main problem. If a strong personality is the thing you need in a protagonist, Connor will disappoint you.

Getting AC3 is pretty much set in stone for me as a story summary won't really do it for me but I will not be getting the DLC.

I would avoid AC3 like the plague if I were you.

Bad story, boring characters with no development, boring missions and is basically a really bad game.

I'll disagree with those that say the story is rubbish, because I thought it was kind of decent. Not stellar by any means but passable enough, its' main problem being that both Connor's and Desmond's stories are wrapped up way too fast and with not enough explanation or exposition done. Connor's story in particular ends so suddenly and gratingly that I felt a disappointed frustration that rivaled that I felt with Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 3.

The characters are solid enough, even if Connor is perhaps the least notorious protagonist of the series, which in some way is off-set by the fact that the primary antagonist is a wonderful character. The missions are also generally solid if somewhat forgettable but this is outweighed by the fact that the gameplay itself is pretty good, especially once you get some equipment options.

All in all, AC3 is well worth a play if you like AC.

AC3 is a buggy unfinished game, with uninteresting protagonists, (Haytham is cool, Connor and Desmond are awful) dull architecture, (Climbing around Colonial New York and Boston isn't particularly interesting) and the free running just kind of feels off.
Play as little of it as possible. 4 is supposed to be a huge improvement. I enjoyed 2, so I clearly don't hate the core premise.

You definitely don't need The Tyranny of King Washington for the story. I think you'll not be too dissatisfied with AC3 though, pay no mind to the naysayers.

I would personally recommend skipping over ACIII altogether, from what I have heard, the story is quite weak (for both Conner and Desmond) and I heard the ending is terrible. But it is your choice, if you wanna tackle it, go for it.

If only we all possessed the depth of character to make personal recommendations on the basis of hearsay and rumor.

If at all possible, I'd recommend you avoid Assassin's Creed 3 and instead read Assassin's Creed: Forsaken (aka: the novelization of AC3), which is far and away the best way to get all the story with none of the boring and repetitive gameplay.

And as others have said, the DLC is just a "What is..?" story that's only VERY loosely tied in with the main story of AC3, ultimately being revealed as a vision provided by the Piece of Eden. It's entirely skippable.

It's entertaining. And if you like AC sufficiently you'll probably like it. But it's not essential for the story at all.

And Connor's mother is the most annoying character in the entire Assassin's Creed series. I don't understand why so many people were excited that she's in the DLC. I have a theory that they were faking excitement because they're fuckin' sheep who thought that they're supposed to like Connor's mother for some reason. All she adds to the story and the DLC is frustration of having to hear her annoying voice and all the stupid shit that comes out of her mouth that doesn't make any goddamn sense.
