Yes, except I won't call it hardcore gaming.

That is, if you want to be an elitist ass about it...lol

I like to think each console as a branching point. Each innovation shows one possible future.

So to answer your question: Iunno, maybe.

It's an interactive form of escapist entertainment. Thus, it's a form of gaming.

I don't really think it represents the future of gaming though. I think motion-controlled gaming is starting to find itself a niche market in the industry, but there will always be a demand for simple button/key interfaces. Sometimes you don't want to flail and jump around if you've come back from a particularly exhausting day at work.

"Gaming" is a verb. I hardly think an inanimate object like the Nintendo Wii could be gaming.

Also, why are Wii games which use the remote excluded? I'm fairly certain that all of them do.

OT: The Wii was the first console to pioneer widely accepted consumer level motion control, which has subsequently been applied to all major consoles in some way. Also, the 'Virtual Console' was the first widely accepted service providing downloadable games, another feature that has been subsequently adapted to all major consoles, and will more than likely continue to be developed and innovated. I think it's safe to say that at least in some fundamental form the Wii could be considered "the future of gaming."

The Wii is absolutely gaming. Just because most of the games for it aren't very sophisticated doesn't mean that it's not gaming, if the NES is gaming, so is the Wii.

I consider it more to be a less intuitive form of curling..

seriously though, I think motion controls don't make a game more immersive. It should actually require less movement rather than more. When we can control our characters directly by plugging in our brains, that would be a step in the right direction.

yes.

It has Twilight Princess and an excellent port of RE4, two games where wiimote controls were done very well and are some of my all time favourite games.

It's gaming, definitely, but the future of gaming.

I think at the moment it should be a combo of motion control and controller. An example would be that most of the games I enjoy require a small (note small) amount of motion input (Mario kart, NSMBW, DCKR) to play, which allows me to enjoy them more so. these actions also allow for less of those awkward combos you would need to press on a regular controller to sometimes pull off moves

A me from 3 years ago said:
It might be, but i dont see Microsoft or Sony dropping to lower-performance designs just to try and undersell Nintendo. Even though Microsoft clearly did that against Sony with the 360.

Sony knows that its user base consists of us gaming regulars as well as others.

Microsoft... really just seems to sniff out the lake of consumer cash and then proceed to suck it dry.

Now i must return to the year 2008 and start quencing the fires of the inter-console flamewars.

What the fuck else would it be? You play games on it, it's gaming. Gaming on an iPad is still gaming, gaming on a PC, is still gaming, gaming on a phone, is still gaming. Given that it has actually led the market in distribution models (if we ignore the PC), and it has caused both Sony and Microsoft to try and jump on the Motion Control bandwagon, yes it is an indicator of the future of gaming.

... and people say PC gamers are elitist, sheesh...

If Tetris is gaming then the Wii sure as hell is...

There doesn't have to be a sole path for gaming in the future, I doubt that a few generations down the line we will be seeing exclusively motion based controls on all consoles (Or I certainy hope not) but I reckon it will be a facet of the widening gaming culture definitely. We can already see today with mobile platforms that gaming is getting more and more versatile so the idea that any one platform will emerge dominant above all the rest is highly unlikely.

Try Super Mario Galaxy 2.
It's one of the best games you're ever likely to play.

Just 'cos titles like wii sports resort sold like crack doesn't mean they're any good.

You know the sad thing? Nintendo have almost all of the best selling games ever. So yeah, I think it is gaming.

The terms "casual" and "hardcore" are pretty dumb when you sit down and really, really think about them.

That out of the way...

Yes, the Wii is "really gaming." Any issues with the Wii (and there are a lot, with it and its library, including many of its high profile titles) don't stem from the Wii not being "really gaming," they stem from questionable design choices (including, but not always, controls).

The wii has the best game of this gen, so it kinda has to be "really gaming".
