Is there a way to look for just clean fanfic?

So I decided to give fanfic a chance, and found it to be extremely disturbing. Maybe I'm going to the wrong sites but almost every story seems to focus on sex (Harry Dresden and John Marcone shipping is especially predominant and disturbing). Do you know how I can find fanfic that purely focuses on making cool stories in a beloved fandom rather than awkward sex, and slash writing?

The fanfic sites I've visited let you choose what sort of fanfics you want to search for. Like, if I want to read a MLP fanfic, I'll go fimfiction and do a search where I keep out the tags I do not want. See if the site you're using has such a feature.

fanfiction.net has booted all adult fics onto the sister adult site, so it's completely clean.

Try there.

Another good place to start, especially if you're looking for a particular fandom, would be a fan community (e.g. on LiveJournal) that might have a categorized archive (e.g. on del.icio.us) that sorts submitted fanfic using tags. LJ actually used to be the best for this, though it's not what it used to be. You might also try googling your fandom of choice and "fic archive," "fic recommendation," "gen fic," etc. (The best stuff, in my experience, is rarely found on big archive sites and tends to be somewhat buried on people's private journals/tumblrs/etc.)

Of course, if you keep hunting and really can't find what you're looking for... it's never too late to start writing. :)

Most fanfic communities use a self-imposed age rating system, so checking the rating on anything you're about to read should help. Fanfiction.net allows you to search by rating, and anything under T will definitely be sexless. I don't know of a way to screen out slash stories in a search on any site (even the "cleanest" of fanfiction can make reference to a slashy relationship), but most authors will use "slash warnings" in the description so just... don't read stories with those warnings, I guess.

Where are you searching? What sites, but mostly what fandoms (unless it's just Dresden Files)? You'll probably get some good referrals if you tell us ;)
