Is there any games this generation that you would considering being regarded as a classic?

'This generation' being everything since the release of the current consoles? So not Halo CE... Shame.

Portal would be my best bet. That was a great game. I like the Fallout 3 and Halo 3 suggestions too. While I like the Walking Dead, I think it needs to stand the test of time a bit longer before it is judged a classic.

Also Minecraft. That's going to be popular for a long time...

Classic in what sense? if you mean games that will go down as classics with the general gaming populous then I Imagine it'll be things like Skyrim, Bioshock infinite, COD and Mass effect (much to my dismay). If you mean games I will look back on and consider classics then I'd probably go for Dark souls, Hotline Miami, STALKER and Minecraft (even though I both simultaneously love it and hate it.)

Call of Duty 4, Spec Ops: The Line, The Walking Dead, Halo 3, Saints Row 2, Mass Effect Trilogy, and if GTA V delivers the goods, then GTA V.

I can see LA Noire maybe being seen as a classic since you really dont find that gameplay anywhere else.

Forgot Bioshock. Gotta include Bioshock.

Also come to think of it Amnesia: Dark Decent would be up there too. Maybe even Slender?

And I haven't even thought about app games like Angry Birds...

Games that will probably be considered classics by a larger audience of people:

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare: Seriously, most of this generation's worth of online games can be traced back to what CoD4 did.

Mass Effect Trilogy: When it comes to trilogies, this will probably be the most remembered of this generation. Though the quality of the series as a whole is somewhat questionable, and though many people hated the ending, I still can't see this trilogy going down negatively for most people.

The Walking Dead: While a lot of this games popularity is sort of due to it being a zombie game (a popular theme this generation) and a game that shares the same name as a popular TV series, I'd imagine the writing and difficult choices will continue to stick out in many people's minds.

Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim: Yeah, most of what Bethesda did this generation will probably be remembered fondly. Maybe Oblivion will fade, most fans of the series seem to have gravitated towards Morrowind or Skyrim, but given how popular and well-received Fallout 3 and Skyrim were, I'd imagine that they'll continue to be talked about long into the next generation.

BioShock: Infinite might be included, but definitely the first BioShock. Given that people still make a big deal of its story and atmosphere over five years after it released makes me believe it will continue to be fondly remembered.

Dark Souls: Yeah, I don't see its crazy, masochistic fanbase ever letting people forget this game.

Assassin's Creed: Basically the action-platformer of this generation.

Batman: Arkham Games: This has pretty much been the premier stealth-action series of this generation, barring Assassin's Creed but that's pretty rotten as a stealth-action game.

As for what I'll remember (I won't give explanations for these):

Xenoblade Chronicles
Tales of Vesperia
Super Mario Galaxy
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (and maybe Modern Warfare 2)
BioShock
Oblivion and Fallout 3
Dark Souls
BlazBlue
L.A. Noire
Mass Effect Trilogy

I would say The Walking Dead, but considering how often I forget to mention that game when there was a perfect time to mention it, I seriously doubt it will be a game that lasts long in my memory.

Most likely
Bioshock
Mass Effect
Assassins Creed (likely two)
Batman Arkham City
Portal
Skyrim(Hell the game was pretty much a religion for a good while after it came out)
Journey
The Souls Games
Uuugh also likely Gears of War (blegh!)
The Walking Dead(?)
and of course Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare.

The Portal, Bioshock, Batman, Mario Galaxy, and BlazBlue series all stand as worthy candidates in my book.

The Mario Galaxy games for one, finding someone who genuinely disliked those two games is a rare creature indeed.
Batman Arkham Asylum
Assassins Creed II
Skyrim
Halo 3
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Zelda: Twilight Princess, even if it is sort of in between two generations.
Wii Sports
Portal
Uncharted 2
Call of Duty 4
Half Life 2, if that is considered as part of the generation in question considering it was on PC first.
Bioshock
Last of Us
Dark Souls
Journey
Mass Effect 2

Edit: Minecraft, I can see people still playing it years from now.

I haven't played or enjoyed all of these games, but I'm sure gamers will be plenty nostalgic about these titles in the years to come.

The Batman: Arkham, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Saints Row, and Portal series are the first ones that come to mind for me.

trying to think of games that haven't been mentioned yet

Castle Crashers
Geometry Wars
For some reason Halo:Reach hasn't been mentioned, I'd say it's just as worthy as Halo 3.
Battlefield 3
Minecraft
Red Dead Redemption
DayZ
maybe Boarderlands
maybe Catherine
also on the RTS front, I'm not sure if Company of Heroes and Command and Conquer 3 was in this generation but I'd say those are classics.

Ok. Generic picks aside. Last of Us was great, but not classic material. It didn't stand out at all in it's mechanics. Even last Gen, my favorites, Jak II and III, Do not hold a candle to something a bit more rare like Okami or Killer 7. My pick for this gen isn't any of the games on the ps3 or 360 or even PC ones like Portal or Minecraft(god I dislike Minecraft).

It is a Wii game. It deserves to be with Mario and such. No More Heroes.... The game is such a masterpiece of gleeful fun and that fact that the game is a deconstruction of the typical action game right down to the strange bosses. It is the game to encompass all bits of all of gaming. Coins and blood splatter in a God of war/mario way.

The bosses are reminiscent in context and character of Metal gear. Heck the main character is the worst bits of all gamers with a dash of the Japanese visual novel folks, we all know who you are.

TLDR: No More Heroes is the best game I played this Gen. And, I loved Lost Odyssey and Spec Ops to death.

I'm pretty picky about the term "classic" but there are a few that qualify, in that they were both really good and had an impact on the gaming world in general.

Fallout 3
Mass Effect Trilogy (despite the ending)
Anything by Naughty Dog (they were the trend setters this generation)
Portal

Possible classics:

Bioshock series (I didn't care for it, but the series has the potential to be remembered for several decades)

Shooters (Oh how I hate them, but if one thing defined this generation, it was Spunk Gargle Wee Wee. For better or worse, Halo and COD ruled the console wars).

Duke Nukem Forever (Master plot, master writing, great gameplay that was in no way derivative... it had it all. In a sea of shooters, Duke Nukem heroically deconstructed the entire genre, and showed us that a real hero isn't some macho warrior, but someone who shows empathy and love for his fellow man, often going unnoticed and unrewarded. Thank you Duke Nukem.)

My classic list would be:

Portal: Has all the elements of a classic, unique gameplay, memorable characters (despite the fact you spend most of you time alone), and an credits song that could be considered a cult classic by-itself.

Bioshock: While regarded as System Shock Under the Sea, the characters, world-building, and infamous plot twist plying into gaming tropes will ensure it will be remembered for years.

Call of Duty 4: The game that started the MMS craze was rather good, nice pacing, interesting locals, and kicked off the 'shock scene' phenomenon. Pity the sequels have forgotten most of what made the original campaign great.

Minecraft: A sandbox without compare, this one will will last the ages.

Bethesda Open Worlds: Oblivion, Fallout 3, Skyrim. Those are the titles other open world games aspire to.

Batman: Arkham Asylum: Before AA, most tie in games like this were regarded as crap. After AA they are still regarded as crap but now people ask "is it as good as Arkham Asylum?"

The Cult Classics are a little different, they are the ones that will be remembered not by the whole due to certain factors but nonetheless will remain in the minds of many.

Spec Ops: The Line: The Line was a product of its time, when MMS were going beyond over-saturation and ridiculousness. The Line took the gameplay and story tropes of that genre and turned them on their heads, showing us how twisted it was and that we should be ashamed for enjoying them.

Dark Souls: Some may wonder why its in the Cult Classic pile, but hear me out. In a time of 'broadening appeal' and to be frank dumbing down of mainstream gaming Dark Souls was a welcome change. Its punishing difficulty will keep it in a niche (and hence keep it in this category) but that isn't bad. I wish there were more games like it.

Fallout: New Vegas: This game can easily slip into the Bethesda category but also has a place here, mainly due to Obsidian and the original Fallout creators bringing us a continuation of the fist two games.

Saints Row 2: The game that stepped out of GTA's shadow and became its own.

1) Team Fortress 2
Valve changing how games are monetized. May not have invented free to play, but they sure as fuck got it on lockdown.

2) Angry Birds
Your grandmother's a gamer now, but only when she's on the toilet.

3) Halo 3
More corporate tie ins than a 90's summer movie,

4) WoW
Killed more asian people in the last 8 years than the US Millitary.

5) Sim City: The MMO
Blizzard's new slogan: Hey, at least we're not EA
