Is This A Good Idea For A Game.

I may be crazy but I?m trying to make a job of writing, mostly movies and television, but I?ve also got an idea for a game, tell me if this sounds good.
Working Title ? Vengeance City
A sandbox game set in Britain where you play corrupt, cocaine addicted policeman Caleb Dawltry, a man who takes anything he wants, kills criminals but still protects the citizens of the city, he despise rapists and paedophiles even refusing to harm children. He works with Vincent Moreno, his partner and husband to his sister Katherine, both of them are under direct orders from Caleb?s police commissioner father Bryce. The story follows the release of gangland boss ?Cut-Eye? Jackson, named for a large knife wound on his eye and who uses the C word like people use a sentence, upon his release he sets about regaining the fear his gang had in the past, a fear that was turned to respect by the second-in-command T.J. Gallagher, a married and expectant father who?s also Caleb?s best friend. Caleb does a few missions to help T.J. with the gang but when (arguably spoiler alert) T.J. is killed on a bank robbery while acting as lookout Caleb goes through a redemption to find his killer and uncovers a partnership that threatens to kill him.
Other characters include,
Mick Dawltry ? Caleb?s younger brother, an office worker who gets fired and turns to drugs. He acts as a contrast to Caleb?s redemption.
Reggie Gallagher ? T.J.?s black adopted brother, a club owner who helps find his brother?s killer.
Ken Cozine ? An Italian mob boss that hires Caleb to help with security following paranoia about police surveillance.
Raymond Webster ? Ken?s right hand man, an undercover cop who?s lost his way
The Columbian ? A drug dealer with a passion for elaborate torturing.
Two gameplay mechanics are the ability to take a hit of cocaine during combat to act like extra armour ? although as the game progresses and Caleb goes through redemption the coke is removed making combat harder ? but take too much and you?ll have an overdose.
The other one is a renamed morality meter called notoriety, do a mission in one way your notoriety will increase meaning the police will be more likely to come after you but will also help with gang respect allowing access to better guns. Conversely do a mission a different way and your notoriety will decrease so there will be less police presence but you gang respect will be low meaning there will be less useful guns.
I hope to hear what you all think of this idea and if you would be interested in buying the game if it ever gets made.

what the hell is the C word?
usually the c stands for **** from what I understand.

Seems like a good setting and some proper initial characterization, but ya gotta be careful with how you portray it because this can easily turn into a parody of a Rockstar game (unless that's what your going for). Even cocaine was used as a health item (it was called flash) for the game adaption of this old seventies movie called the Warriors made by Rebellion and I think published by Rockstar.

keep workin on it with some angle, anything and everything has potential if refined properly.

Well, I'm seeing you've got a lot of character development down, which is a proper first step. However, what settings will you put these people in (yes, Britain, revenge, battling crime, but I'm looking for more: how will you interpret the city and what features will come alive?) and what will happen in the story? Yes, I know sometimes sandbox and story aren't often used in the same sentence, but I'd like to see what you'd do and where you'd take the plot. How will you drive the plot? Will it be a fairly straightforward narrative with the options of side-missions, will there be a branching path you can take, can you ignore the plot altogether and just toddle around the city? Will your character receive GTA-style phone calls or updates on side missions he can take to protect average citizens to incorporate your character description? Will passersby have a diamond pop over their head if they're in trouble, with shrieking or "Help help, the bad man took my purse!" miming? Key mode for storytelling: show, not tell. Lots of things should be fleshed out before we can give you a simple yay or nay. Without a story, it just sounds like an idea board. Good luck writing! :)

C word stands for cake. It wouldn't be my sort of game though it does sound like an interesting not my sort of game... game. I like the idea of overdosing on health potions - I'll be taking that mechanic thank you very much...

Interesting and IMHO overdue premise, but Caleb, Bryce, TJ and "cut-eye" are SO american-sounding it hurts, like they've fallen out of an old episode of Dynasty or something. Rejig the names and we're getting there. Also I second the "don't have a mafia boss" (or a dealer called "the columbian" - *please*) sentiment. A small injection of locale reality plus originality is all this needs.
And don't just make it all about the coke, because we've been through that particular "evil videogames corrupting our children" mill a few times already and it's just not fun any more. It'd be a good gimmick, but not the be all and end all.

OK, executive meddling done, game is now thoroughly screwed, let's release it in time for xmas then whine about the 6/10 ratings.

I read the phrase "married and expectant father" and instantly knew this guy was going to kick the bucket. my suspicion was confirmed within a single sentence.

anyway, OT:

The premise itself can work as a game. It doesn't feel too different from your basic GTA style game. I kind of think you could push the envelope a bit with the morality meter though.

It sounds like a good enough idea, if you're that invested in the story you should try and add an aspect to the game that can symbolize character growth (for example: maybe over the course of the game your abilities will weaken depending how much cocaine you've used in previous missions and possibly end the game with a battle against someone symbolizing your main character if he continues to live the way he does) maybe add other drugs to the game or an aspect to build up a tolerance and switch to stronger drugs.
And remember to make YOUR game, not let any gimmicks or shortcuts get in the way of the game YOU want to make and the story YOU want to tell.

sorry if I'm a little over dramatic but I've dreamed of being a game designer since I was 8 and this year that dream may be close since I'm going to college for game design. I have about I have about 7.5 ideas planed out and I hope people can understand the stories I want to tell. I'll be sure to give your game a try.

Sounds alright. I'd change TJ to an ex-con though maybe, someone who turned 'Cut Eye' in or something, or have him killed in a less extreme crime or something. Also, I'd make Vincent be Bryce's son. Makes it more interesting if he somehow gets involved, but he's the son of the Commissioner, so it's a lot more complicated.

Those are just my suggestions though.

That would sound good. Make it so that if you keep up the lifestyle, it'll effect you negatively in the long run or something.
