i am talking about the hp pavilion dv6, I need something with fair battery life, but i would also like something that can handle fun stuff too, like games.
i would give a picture for reference but for the life of me i don't know how!
so yeah, is this a good value laptop for the things i want, it won't see much uses like video editing or cuda, basically just games, net and work.
Gaming for a laptop won't go far... you won't be able to run any powerful games very well.
So if you want high powered gaming i.e. The sims 3, Crysis 2, others like that. Then get a gaming desktop.
Hmm the DV6 looks fine for internet, word processing and smaller games (by which I mean the likes of Rise of Nations, Battlefield etc). Looks like it has a fair amount of battery life.
Very good processor and graphics chips by the look of it.
Not quite. Look on, http://www.newegg.com/ for laptops with at least a dual core 2.0ghz processor, a dedicated video card, and at least 3gb of ram. Or you can go straight to http://www.alienware.com/ except they can be pricey if your looking for something more basic.
Here is a good one, also remember to read reviews.

If your talking of the alienware, each one has the i7 chip. The only one that has excessive battery life is the m11x because you can overclock it to 2.663ghz, while the stock speed is 1.8ghz?? Can't remember. Also it can have a max of 8gb of ram, and a 1gb nvidia 335m with a second low power basic intel intergrated graphics for longer battery life. The max battery life on the low settings is 8 hours, with everything on is 4.5 hours.
Also if you're talking about the acer, then first no it will not affect battery life, and with a laptop you cannot upgrade graphics after you have made the final decision on the graphics.
You could also buy a laptop with your desired specs, and then buy a 12 cell battery.

sweet, thanks mate.
one more thing, i want to be sure that it can run sc2 at least reasonably well, i know it's supposed to be easy on systems being a blizz game and all, but i looked at some preview footage of the campaign and it looks pretty sophisticated, anyone maby played the beta on such a machine (or equivalent)?

I just looked at the system requirements, and it looks like the m11x will blow it away. The requirements are pretty low so you should be able to run it on high. Also to keep the computer as usable for as long as you can get it with the top i7, the 8gb ram, a bluetooth module (you should be able to use a ps3 controller with it), and windows 7 ultimate. Also make sure to do your homework on how to change the processor speed and the graphics. When I got mine I didn't have a problem because I'm very good with computers. So if your not that good with computers do your homework. And your welcome.
iv never overclocked before but i still like to think im pretty good with computers.
Perhaps im just one of those pretenders.
Thanks for the help though, i was pretty much set on it anyway, i just wanted a second opinion.
I have been happily surprized by the phrase "blow it away"!

Oh, and welcome to the Alienware world my friend. Couple other nice things is it has hdmi, the battery is built in, and the nameplate is a nice touch too.
Oh, and one other thing is to make sure that at sometime you get an external cd/dvd-rw drive unless your gonna use Steam or such.
Is that it? Cos if it is, we sell them at work, and I'm absolutely planning on buying one (staff discount, fuck yeah).
Anyway, the i7 is a pretty awesome processor, and with the standard amount of (upgradeable) RAM and the beastly Graphics Card, I can actually do some non-console gaming for once. I'm not fussed with a full HD screen either, which is one thing most performance laptops have which this one lacks. 640gb hard drive is a decent amount, but if you let the Hard Drive space seriously change your decision (unless the hard drive is like 100gb), you're a muppet. You can get a terabyte of space for under $100 nowadays.
Actually if you think about it most computers that aren't as good as Alienware are even more costly. The specs of the M11X beat others at about the same price.

if that is the dv6 pavillion then yeah, that was my plan
the m11 is nice, but im thinking notebook more than netbook, and is doesn't have an optical drive. Im sure that could get annoying.
so the newer Dv6 models seem to boast a graphics card called 320m, apprently not to be confused with the older 230m. I look it up, but all I get are videos for macbooks, apparently the new ones are eqipped with it.
is that more powerfull than the m11?
Also, someone at a store seemed to think that other companies are about to open the floodgates on their shiny new models, and the clearance prices on some of the older models seems to indicate thats true.
If so, how would this affect prices on models such as the dv6 and will a better model likely come along?

yeah, thats one of the big reasons im not sure about the m11 no optical drive, you can get pavilion with blu ray drive. also, thats a small computer, very small. how will I enjoy my games on the teenie weenie screen, and for gaming the keys might be alright, buy i have pretty ogresque fingers, and typing for work and stuff might be an issue........

We already have shinier models. i7 processor, 8gb of RAM, 1.2TB hard drive and 1gb ATI Graphics card. Can't remember the exact model. But for your money mate, that DV6-3031TX (i7, 4gb RAM, 640gb HDD, 1gb gfx card) is great.
Keep in mind that the DV6 isn't a computer. It's a series of computers. There are a number of DV6s on the market, and they do differ in specs/price. Saying you're getting a DV6 is like saying you're getting an iPod. It tells me what you're generally getting, but I couldn't possibly pick a computer out based on that information. You need to figure out what model you want, because otherwise you won't be able to properly shop for a computer. I do definitely recommend the 3031TX, because of the quality/cost ratio. For a good deal on it, you'd be paying a bit below 1500. But if you want bargaining power, keep in mind that the price we pay to get them in is:
$1288
So our particular store will never dip below that, and seeing as the RRP is 1700 or so, $1497 (the price we advertise) is bloody good, and it's what we say is our rock bottom price. I make 20 bucks commission per sale at that price, and you get a good computer for cheap. Everybody wins.
Edit: That M11x is fucking tiny. That's not a notebook, it's pretty much a netbook on steroids. Sure, the specs are decent, but if it doesn't suit his needs it's pretty much useless. The standard netbook is about 10.1" or so, and those are impossible for me to type on. I find my 14" screen too small sometimes. I wouldn't recommend going with one that small. It's shiny, and actually a pretty powerful computer, but it's also a gimmick. Go with a standard sized one, you'll enjoy it more.

In lou of recent events involving this very response, if it has a button next to the arrow keys that takes you back a webpage, i don't want it. I don't care if it's a gift and the most powerful laptop on the market (perhaps a slight exaggeration), i will still throw that ************ in the trash.
Actually if you think about it most computers that aren't as good as Alienware are even more costly. The specs of the M11X beat others at about the same price.
They beat other laptops, which isn't difficult; any sort of gaming desktop would just absolutely destroy the M11X - and most gaming desktops would beat the top-end Alienware laptops.
I suggest NEVER buying Alienware. On the desktop front, they're absurdly overpriced for what you get, and on the laptop front, they're laptops and therefore automatically mediocre at gaming - and most other things by virtue of certain compromises made for gaming.
I wasn't comparing it to desktops, I know better than to do that. But I have done plenty of research and the alienware laptops will absolutley destroy all but a few other higher priced gaming laptops. I have an alienware m11x, and it will destroy my desktop in gaming. My desktop has an AMD 6400+, 4GB of 800mhz RAM, and an XFX 4770, yet the m11x will kill my desktop, which is a basic gaming desktop. Also if you want absurdly overpriced, check out a Mac Pro desktop, not the all in one, and add everything to it. It comes out to about 20k. My m11x will play MW2, NFS Shift, and L4D2, with no lag or anything at all.
