I haven't really used this extensively in gameplay, but I know that as a scout I can jump onto an opponent's head, where I can stand, shoot down, and kill them. Is this considered an exploit or a legitimate tactic?

It's probably an exploit but sounds fun.
Maybe, but it doesn't really give you much of an advantage compared to standing beside someone, shooting them - other then the sheer surprise of someone standing on your head, shooting your face.

I wouldn't call it an exploit at all. It's actually quite a unique and probably valid tactic. Imagine the look on a heavy's face when he turns around to shoot the scout behind him only to later learn that his new hat is made of scattergun. That's a neat idea.

I think it's technically an exploit, but as you said, the advantage it provides isn't big enough to label it as an unfair move, because it actually requires skill to execute.

Well...its very hard to do that...even more than getting on top of the fountain of stormwind in World of Warcraft. :p

Its hardly an exploit. If any scout could do it it could be an exploit.

Yeah, the accuracy needed to pull that off is deserving of a free kill even if it's luck.

Okay, better question: If I did this in a game, what's the likelihood that I'd be kicked?
Um... i don't think you'd get kicked, if you did it to me, i'd start laughing; i mean thats a pretty epic kill.

If its in the game, theres nothing wrong with using it in my opinion.

But, the chances of jumping onto someones head is pretty low, especially if they are moving. So, no i don't think its an exploit.

I've done this numerous times, it's a legitimate tactic. Since enemies cannot be passed through, you are able to stand on top of them. This isn't limited to the Scout either. Any class can land on the head of an enemy player.

Legitemate tactic, any class can stand on the head of an enemy player. In the case of the scout it's just easier because he double jumps, for the others you need a height advantage, no decent server would kick you for doing it.

If someone did that to me, I would just laugh my ass off. Would take some skill to land on top of a small moving target like that. :)

Just wanted to check with the gaming morality experts before using something like this in practice.

I did it yesterday playing as sniper, a scout decided he'd stop moving whilst capping the 1st point on Egypt stage 2. I was stood on the wall surrounding the point, I dropped down on to his head, crouched, and took a swing with my kukuri. Unfortunately it wasn't a killing blow and he moved before I could take a second swing.

not really, it's like the sniper that takes a headshot in every shot, he starts up being annoying, but in the end you end up respecting his skill, because really, there isn't much you can do (unless of course spy his ass). It's just a characteristic typical to the class, and besides, if it where, many more people would get angry at it, and Valve'd probably have to correct it somehow. Besides, by far and large, the scout is not the only class that likes to jump on enemy heads. The aforementioned spy can always get a kill if he piggyback rides someone and stabs, and a pyro that attacks from above is a more than deadly parasite. So in short, it's not an exploit, it's a more than valid and almost always ultimately succesful tactic.

:p no problem I do that all the time. It's not hard, it's only prone to failure. It's only REALLY bad when you fall on the wrong side of the heavy. Fortunately enough, there is only 1/4 chances that you fall on the dangerous side so most of the tiems you'll get the kill.
