The AFL (Australian Football League) Grand Final just ended and
it was a draw
To clarify, our Football is not the European type, it is closer to Rugby.
I ask you Escapists, is this kind of thing occurring during a Grand Final of any sport that bad?

I don't have a sister, so I can't speak to the cliché about ties, but I'm of the mind that the only time a championship is allowed to end in a draw is in a scenario where a rematch can be arranged for the same stakes---that is to say, in boxing.

I'm surprised that's even possible. In pretty much every major league here in Europe, to my recollection as I don't follow sports that much, these things are all tournament-style; winner goes on to the next round, last winner takes the cup.

How can there be a Grand Final without a winner? That's just...odd.

Aren't there rules to prevent it from happening? The Champions League (football league for the ones who don't know) over here first adds extra time to a match if it's a draw after the regular time, and if it's still a draw after that they start taking penalties until one team has scored more penalties than the other.

I'm surprised the AFL doesn't have anything like that, thought things like that were pretty standard.

I don't know if I want to call it bad, it's just peculiar. Like, why didn't they alter the rules to allow for a rematch or for the game to continue for another quarter (or half or period or whatever, probably half) or until sudden death?

You can't really have two champions either can you? I mean, I guess they could be half-champions, but still it seems to be a poor decision to allow a championship game to end in a draw.

Play until everyone on the field faints from exhaustion except one guy, who finally wins the game for his team in minute 793 or something. Just try to avoid the draw.

Can't they just have a rematch?
It's pretty stupid to just leave it like that.
Have them play again and the winner takes all.

The game will be replayed about a week from now to decide the winner, remember, this is not European football (which we call soccer).
