I disagree, especially with the PS4. In fact, a PS4 that has been photo-shopped white looks fantastic actually.

Now they just need to make one like that =P
You know what that actually does look really nice, the black doesn't suit it at all.

I think the PS4 looks pretty cool. Not a fan of the Xbone's design though but they certainly aren't the ugliest consoles. Not like it matters anyway. Of all the things that matter in a console, its look is on the bottom of the list.

I think the PS4 looks very good, actually. I think it looks slick. On a side note, I love my old, fat PS3. I always thought it looked very good on its shelf under my TV.

You know what this console generation is missing? Wood grain sides. Definitely Wood grain.
Wood grain needs to make a comeback.

Problem with using wood these days is that is does fuck all to dampen EM-R interference (and PSUs put out a fuckload) and it's thermal retention is a right bastard when dealing with modern electronics. It's not undoable but you do need to make a few design modifications for shielding and ventilation to make it work.

The other problem is that really nice timber costs a fucking fortune. Me and one of my nephews designed a PC case that looked like a piece of 1930s wood&leather desk furniture... never built it because it would have costs several hundred dollars for the materials. Oh yeah, the other thing is building something from wood that was designed for metal and plastic will effectively double its weight.

As for people complaining about the ugliness of consoles... get a custom case made, you lazy tarts. Or pull the case panels off the console and have at it with some two pack automotive paint (the clear coat makes the difference).

Both the xbox one and ps4 are hideously ugly, why do you think the developers made them look like that? they kind of look dated. Do you think the next gen is the ugliest consoles generation ever??

My only point is: Who cares? I really never "admired" my playstation 1,2,3 or megadrive. And heck my PC is a huge brick that isn't "pretty" either. As long as the console and games are good i couldn't care less if the console was pink.

Oh, I know using real wood would be a very poor idea; but I'm talking about old-fashioned fake woodgrain patterned plastic. Call it an homage to gaming's roots. I am heading to GIMP right now with the PS4 pic and a woodgrain pattern. :p

I honestly, don't even know what the Wii U looks like. I know what the controller looks like, though. I know I've seen it at least once...
That doesn't speak well about it in general.

Seriously, is it any wonder that there are people who don't know the Wii U is an actual console?
Definitely a car radio

Then again, that picture actually makes it look fairly nice. I definitely can admire the simplicity of it's front.
Is it any wonder that I had no idea what the Wii U looks like? You could place it next to a bunch of car radios in an electronic store and it would look right at home. It may not be ugly, but it certainly doesn't catch the eye.

Also, I could have swore it was white...

What we need is more colour, or wood-lining or something like that. I'm tired of having black or white boxes under my TV, I want something different. I remember seeing photoshops for PS4 colours that made the top part different colours and they looked so much more classy than the black we have now. What I don't want, is colour all over the box; colour all over the box makes it stand out way too much and makes it looks like a kids toy when colour on parts of the console makes it look like a sleek car.
I'd have to agree with at least having the option to have some color on the console. like some kind of special edition form or even some customized order system. Personally I'd like a PS4 with some dark or forest green top. Hell, If I feel very adventurous I'd get some kind of glossy lime green finish.
You asked for it.

No idea idea why the second one in this photoshop collection has the Xbox 180 logo on it. Maybe to show that it's the same color?

Also, above 80sboy posted several other pics of the PS4 in colors like red, purple, and gold.

Who cares what the device looks like that you're playing on?
People that have certain aesthetic tastes and want their media systems to blend together and fit into the room and not have an ugly device standing out like a sore thumb perhaps? Or people that want their AV setup to be a room focus and want it all to look good? People with ghetto setups and a TV on a cupboard with the console on the floor or just stacked somewhere might not be bothered but others are.
Even if it's an ugly device in a pretty room, if it's capable and provides fun with it's games then the aesthetics will be overlooked I feel. Again, the US's SNES was not exactly stellar looking and as some age they have turned puke yellow, the Gamecube while simplistic was bright purple, orange and gold, not exactly something that blended and it sold just fine.
That was then, nice looking AV setups where even more niche than are now. TV companies spend millions making their stuff look nice, a bezel a few milliliters larger than the competitors can kill a TVs sales and so can an ugly BD player. How are these consoles going to fit in with wall mounted setups and gorgeous looking wireless soundbars? The Xbox 360 was the final straw for me it had to get out of the living room and that was eight years ago and things have moved on further, I am not alone either people spend from anywhere to 2x to 10x (and more) the cost of these consoles on a home cinema. You think they want an ugly console?

A lot of those gamers that didn't care about the SNES or Gamecube looked like are now 30-40 something adults that have decent media setups now, like I said people with ghetto setups probably don't care. People that don't bother with interior design probably don't care, not everyone that does will care either but everyone is different. For some the console will have to go somewhere else, or get the better looking option.

So yes some people do care and the looks of a console do matter.
Yes, I'm one of those people who grew up with the SNES & Genesis and have a decent media set up, and I've enjoyed many past consoles but as you insisted no I don't have a ghetto set up, it's just possible to arrange devices that are ugly into the mix to make them less noticable :p

PS3 at launch looked like a George Foreman grill but because of it's extensive media potential (bluray/dvd, photo slide shows, PS3,2,1 games, internet browsing) people overlooked their new George Foreman grill.

I'm not saying yes everyone welcome a neon green random color flashing piece of modern art onto their shelf but these systems now even if they are a bit odd looking no one is going to look over and go UNG what the fuck is that??

Yes ugly consoles may be off putting however what you can play on them can often matter more to players.

These new consoles are not so bad, they are mostly inoffensive and unremarkable. The Wii U is plain but its a nice size, The PS4 is probably the best looking. The Xbone is OK if a little big, the problem is consoles don't really fit in with wall mounted setups anymore. Both the PS4 and the Xbone have to have the stupid motion control sensor in place as well.

Like I said some people do care, you seem to think you speak for everyone. Lots of people care in fact and this thread is proof of it, people care for different reasons and others don't care. There is no right or wrong, just don't think you represent everyone.

I never said I did, and I never said don't care, I asked why. Who could have such a big head where they would say "You're stupid and wrong"

It's all opinions here, don't get me wrong if a device looks great then fine that's just another bonus but it's not high on my personal list and I was curious where it would wind up on someone elses personal list.

Again, not opposed but it's not even on the top 10 list personally haha. I mean I have a bloody silver PSP2000, I hate the damned things color visually but I put on a game and that all goes away. Then again black isn't much better as the finger print magnet it turns into.

Piano black is the worst option for devices, physically suck fingerprints from across the room I swear.

Its not so much the black its the damn horrible glossy plastic they seem to make almost everything out of, it really gets on my tits with mobile devices. Things you have to handle all the time, you end up permanently polishing things. Nintendo surprised me here making the 3DS XL out of matt plastic and its a god send.

Yeah wasn't the regular 3DS shiny plastic? I don't know why they think it was a good idea for these things, yes they look amazing in photoshoots and you can pan around and get that awesome shine that sorta slides down the device and ooo and ahhh....then you get it in your hand and it looks filthy in 15 minutes.

That's the one choice I will say is a off-putting thing because it makes cleaning it a hassle, it looks and feels nasty after use and again you want it to look that nice you need to apply cleaners, microfiber cloth or more.

...Oh yeah my Vita has that piano black look.......augh. |: Well again, for me games override that and they haz got that.

Question for you Mr 3DS XL owner, my friend tells me the 3DSXL has a worse quality screen vs the original 3DS and judging by the one in the shop that doesn't seem terribly true. I'm someone who is actually hurt by viewing that things 3D in even the lowest setting so tell me, in 2D mode is the XL far far more worth it or no?

The Nintendo had fucking grey and purple. Who ever combined those colors was a genius.
The Gamecube is one of the few video game systems that looks distinctive and interesting to me. To be honest, the Wii also looked pretty good when compared to the giant curved brick and the backyard grill.

I don't find them to be particularily ugly. In fact, the ps4 looks rather sweet, MUCH better than the ps3 to me. The new xbox is just bland but not particularily ugly to me. And the wii u' okay.

For me it was generation 6 that had the most "ugly" designs: The old ps2 (before the slim) really didn't look all that well. The xbox was a freaking monster and the gamecube was outright silly, although as pointed out by the above poster, quite noticeable (and it had a FREAKING HANDLE ! IT'S AWESOME)

The screen is the same resolution but slightly bigger in size, this reduces pixel density a bit. I don't think it makes a huge difference, 3DS games are not technical powerhouses in the first place so the odd occasion you get a bit of blockiness it just blends in with the natural blockiness. The XL is worth it for the slightly better battery life I think, as for 2D mode its all I use because the 3D is pretty pointless. Too specific an angle you have to hold it at, the matt plastic is worth it too. If your having trouble with your Vita get one of those Sony cleaning cases, I got one and they are pretty good. Its got microfiber inside and its enough to get most fingerprints off every time you insert and remove it.

Yeah for now I just use a microfiber cloth and that nonsense for the Vita.

Blockiness isn't such a big deal, I like me 2D sprite games with their big fat pixels unfiltered so it's fine.
I've been pondering a 3DSXL is all, there's not many games that catch my fancy so it's not worth the investment yet, but Sonic is a good one and if they (please please please) manage a good Metroid that isn't Other M? All over it.

That purple PS4 and that silver one look amazing to be quite honest. I'd definitely buy a purple PS4 if they were to make one.

OT: A console's looks really don't deter me from whether it has what I want and it's functionality. Heck the PS4 looks like 2 slim PS2s glued together and put at an angle. The Xbox One looks like an old Betamaxx player, and the Wii U looks like an old radio someone removed from a car. >.>
