That's not how money works...

And the cynical approach would only be valid if he dumped the money into rich-dude-toys and "business expenses", since there are loopholes that would allow him to dodge taxes that way. Donating money, however, results in less money either way, and significantly more loss than mere taxes.

Both those things can be true at the same time.

That fact that everyone feels the need to clarify this is a little sad. Did anyone really attribute the quality of the prequels to George Lucas being a mean person? Because that's all kinds of absurd.

Why can't we just appreciate that George Lucas is doing something nice and not try to defend our hatred of him, or start questioning his motives for doing so.

That officially reduces all milestone threads from "look at my steely manhood!" to "me and my inch of overcooked linguine are going to go cry in a corner now." I am not a cynic, or perhaps I just am when it comes to George Lucas. Look, even if every cent went to charity eventually, Lucas would not be doing this out of generosity, rather, he would be doing it to make himself be perceived as generous. I have literally watched Lucasfilm put dozens of small theaters -and hundreds of people- out of business and their jobs for very minor contract violations on Episode I, such as the pre-screening of a print, or of technical problems that resulted in what Lucasfilm defined as sub-par exhibition.

I suppose it cannot be helped that I do not like the man, regardless of the quality of his films, I will never see him as generous, and can never see him as something to extol.

That outlook is extremely cynical, because what you say for George Lucas could be said about any act of charity, regardless of how well such a view is received (hint: not well at all). I say it doesn't matter why he's doing it, what matters is that MANY people will benefit from his actions, and for that I appreciate him.

i'm genuinely sorry, i just really wanted to put in an ASOIF quote. donating the money doesn't make him a better director/writer/whatever you want to complain about, but i don't think he was ever really a bad person, but now we can see (assuming it's true, which i imgine it is) that he is a good person.

Sure, if the main argument was that it would be better if he hadn't been born, that would be refuted out the window.
