Maybe he's just dong that to avoid taxes which will leave him financially worse off if he didn't donate that money, somehow.

Me, cynical?
That's not how money works...

And the cynical approach would only be valid if he dumped the money into rich-dude-toys and "business expenses", since there are loopholes that would allow him to dodge taxes that way. Donating money, however, results in less money either way, and significantly more loss than mere taxes.

Anyone else hate threads with vague unspecific titles that force you to click on them to find out what they're actually about?

One of these things is completely irrelevant to the other.

George Lucas is a good guy because he donated a staggering amount of money to charity. CHEERS!
George Lucas is a bad director because he hoisted those godawful prequels on us. JEERS!

Both those things can be true at the same time.
That fact that everyone feels the need to clarify this is a little sad. Did anyone really attribute the quality of the prequels to George Lucas being a mean person? Because that's all kinds of absurd.

Why can't we just appreciate that George Lucas is doing something nice and not try to defend our hatred of him, or start questioning his motives for doing so.

*sigh*

Completely unrelated but every time I hear or read 'is this true?' in a serious tone, all I can respond with is 'Yes, it is true... this man has no dick!' and imagine William Atherton...
You too, eh?

OT: Lucas is not an evil man, the rabidity (rabidness?) of Internet jerkwads' assertions contrary notwithstanding. I don't care for the prequels, and I absolutely detest his messing with the original movies, but George is simply.....misguided. Misguided by what, I don't know.

Going off topic again -- did I really see someone with forty-four thousand posts above me?? That officially reduces all milestone threads from "look at my steely manhood!" to "me and my inch of overcooked linguine are going to go cry in a corner now." Seriously, how does someone get 44,000 posts? The Escapist isn't an old website, as far as I know. How many posts per day is that?

Forgive him? For what? What has he done over the last 15 years that's been so horrible?

Jar Jar? The Special Editions? Get the fuck over it.

Anakin? That guy was awesome.

Indy 4? See Jar Jar.

Love ya George!

Yeah! Ghostbusters nostalgia! =P

Regarding postcount, I think Sassafrass has sixty odd thousand... I know there are a couple users with that obscene a number of posts... -_-

I am not a cynic, or perhaps I just am when it comes to George Lucas. Look, even if every cent went to charity eventually, Lucas would not be doing this out of generosity, rather, he would be doing it to make himself be perceived as generous. I have literally watched Lucasfilm put dozens of small theaters -and hundreds of people- out of business and their jobs for very minor contract violations on Episode I, such as the pre-screening of a print, or of technical problems that resulted in what Lucasfilm defined as sub-par exhibition.

I suppose it cannot be helped that I do not like the man, regardless of the quality of his films, I will never see him as generous, and can never see him as something to extol.
That outlook is extremely cynical, because what you say for George Lucas could be said about any act of charity, regardless of how well such a view is received (hint: not well at all). I say it doesn't matter why he's doing it, what matters is that MANY people will benefit from his actions, and for that I appreciate him.

Perhaps it's absurd, but already in this thread you see people making the opposite correlation. "Oh, you gave money? Well, I guess I can't say bad things about the prequels!"

Apparently, it's no longer viable to hate his movies because of his philanthropic endeavours, which kind of implies the opposite was true before.

i'm genuinely sorry, i just really wanted to put in an ASOIF quote. donating the money doesn't make him a better director/writer/whatever you want to complain about, but i don't think he was ever really a bad person, but now we can see (assuming it's true, which i imgine it is) that he is a good person.

3 Years, three months equals
= 1,187 days

44,279
= 37 Posts per day.
= 9 posts per hour, four hours a day.
= A post every 6 minutes of free-time.

Sounds like a part-time job posting on these forums.

OT: HAN SHOT FIRST!, lets not forget that important detail.

He can be a terrific guy and make shitty production decisions at the same time. The two are not mutually exclusive. Sure, if the main argument was that it would be better if he hadn't been born, that would be refuted out the window. But the argument is that he made some decisions that ruined small pieces of Star Wars. Or large ones depending on who you ask. No-one as far as I know was disputing his integrity as a person.

Why do nearly all super rich people become philanthropic in their old age?

math + snip = snip
Well.....I was just being silly, but thanks. I've managed one or two days of that kind of posting but it's not satisfying. When the day is over, I look back and say, "Dammit, all I did was fart around on the Escapist. I've got work tomorrow and the laundry still isn't done....."

Wow, that is incredibly impressive, and something I certainly didn't expect. Though I still affirm that Han shot first, with this I guess we can move on, and admit to ourselves that George Lucas is no longer one of nerd-cultures public enemies.

But ya, if episodes XII through IX could contain no Jar Jar, that would be swell...
Episodes twelve through nine...? What...?

Le Derp. This children is why you don't do Roman Numerals while sleep deprived. Lets go with VII through IX.
