"A "plastic soup" of waste floating in the Pacific Ocean is growing at an alarming rate and now covers an area twice the size of the continental United States, scientists have said."

OMFG SICK!

If it all floats, wrap it up in durrable plastic bags, which you wrap up in even bigger bags, which you wrap togeather with nets or something, untill you have functional plastic islands. that way they're not beeing mistaken as food by animals.

Isn't there any profit to be made by recycling plastic?

1.Set sails
2.??
3. profit!

STEP 2 HAS BEEN DISCOVERED! gather and reprocess plastic!

Whoa, I had no idea this was happening... we need to dispose of this somehow. Recycle the plastic and any other materials, burn everything else... not that there would be much to recycle as most of it you could probably melt down and reuse. This could be a major project, it would create jobs and give an ever-cynical and depressed world something idealistic to do.

Don't let the bastards grind you down OP. Life can seem bleak at times but people can and do do good things and the world is still a better place than it was a hundred years ago, even outwith Europe and North America standards are improving. While we have serious pollution problems people are slowly cottoning on and getting better, though we could be doing things faster. (Humans could always be doing things faster, politics and buisiness usually makes sure we don't.) We've never had it this good, even with the recession. Really.

EDIT: This would, in fact, make a good summer job. Ok, cleaning up waste isn't the most pleasant job, but knowing your making the environment a better place makes up for that.

Woah! Thats depressing. Just what I needed. Thanks :p

Well, supposedly prisons in my country are overcrowded, so I have an idea. Get all the cons on boats, send em out there, and get 'em to to collect all the shit floating around there untill their sentence is over. That woukld kill 2 birds with one stone now wouldnt it?

No need to thank me Mr. Brown, its my pleasure....

[small]Disclamer: This idea may or may not work as intended.[/small]

Very positive, especially for someone with a name like that.
Were you being that ironic on purpose or do you genuinly mean it?

That is actually completely exaggerated. A lot.
The Great Garbage Patch is actually only the size of Texas.
(True fact.)

I'm deadly serious. Despite my usually making cynical comments in regards to situations, I'm pretty optimistic and idealistic at heart, though I've been given enough bloody noses to know that being nice doesn't always lead to good things.

As for my name, I made it up on the spot. It seemed like a good name to have as my identification on a gaming website. Out of curiosity what was ironic about my post?
