Isn't it ironic?

Well.... this is probably more coincidental than ironic (according to Bender [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2krXq8fw90]), but the juxaposition of these two events occurring so closely together can't really be overlooked.

Less than a week ago (using North American release dates here), Duke Nukem Forever was released.... and was a profound disappointment. Over a decade in the making, and at best it's a relic which hasn't aged well at all. The gleefully inappropriate humour doesn't hit the mark either; arguably one of the best reasons for getting it is morbid fascination (in regards to both the humour and the gameplay). Terribly unfortunate, but that's the truth.

And yesterday, the remake of the best-reviewed game of all time (and frequent contender for THE best game of all time) was released - Ocarina of Time 3D. The reviews so far have been very positive (~93% average on Gamerankings), though the fact it's a remake means it can't blow people away like the original did for the N64 in 1998. Nevertheless, at the very least OoT is demonstrating the fact it's a timeless classic.

Ironic, or just a humourous coincidence? Probably the latter, but a bit irrelevant in any case.
And it would appear an elven chap in green tights wants to say something.

I still feel that people were unfairly harsh on Duke Nukem Forever, and I think that people are unfairly nice to Ocarina of Time.

One of the most misused words in the entire English language.

There are several types of irony.

Socratic irony - When someone pretends to be naive about a certain subject, and uses his questions about it to point out a flaw in the established belief. This is often used on the TV show South Park, where the children often ask questions about a situation until the folly in a parent's decision becomes clear.

Sarcasm - Understatement, mocking overstatement, or heavy-handed irony (stating the flat opposite of the truth) where both parties are aware of the difference between what's said and what's actually happening.

Situational Irony - The irony that most people think of. A difference between what you expect to happen (in a story, for example) and what actually happens. Rain on your wedding day would be a sort-of example, because a wedding day is generally expected to be a perfect, happy day. The good advice you didn't take, however, would NOT be irony, because that has nothing to do with what is expected and what isn't expected. A traffic jam when you're already late wouldn't be irony either; there's no automatic expectation that traffic will be fine, just because you happen to be late.

Irony of Fate - The concept that the Gods, Fates, etc. are toying with humans for amusement by using irony. Beethoven's loss of hearing is a famous example; one would expect a composer to be able to hear his compositions, but fate denied him that ability.

That's not irony.

Always bet on Link

I can see why. I know very few people who fondly remember Duke when they think about it. And I can understand why. However, my cousin is a Zelda-ophile and buys any and every Zelda game and loves it. I guess Duke Nukem fans just moved on.

Also, this is not irony.

not really ironic, one was a remake, the other was a poorly made game or so say the critics, I have yet to play so I have yet to weigh in my opinion if it is fun or not. It just happens to games, they are either good or they are bad, it's the way of life in the gaming world.

Actually, irony is when a "No boating" sign gets bent into a boat and then used as a boat. I can't make it simpler to understand than that really.

I have Alanis Morissette in my head.

My head is surprised, as I remember I do not dislike Alanis Morissette. She is God, after all.

Anyway, your tidbit is slightly humorous. Though I'm a massive Zelda fan. It didn't make me laugh, but it always makes me smile to see that a classic game is still beloved by many.

Also, everyone is going to try to define irony for you. I'll join in: Your fact would be irony if it were neatly pressed with no sign of wrinkles anywhere.

Duke was unfairly judged. The biggest joke in gaming history it could never live up to the expectations. That being said I have purchased Ocarina of Time for the 4th time now... Nuff Said.

I have no idea how the two events are even in the remotest possible way connected.

About as ironic as rain on your wedding day.
Or a free ride when you've already paid.
Or good advice that you just can't take.
Who would have thought?
It figures...

It's neither ironic nor a coincidence, just circumstance.

Legend of Zelda is a classic series, and Ocarina of Time is perhaps the best-known and best-loved entry in said series. Duke Nukem Forever is a game that was released a decade late and just failed to live up to our expectations for that amount of prep time.

And everyone's missing the video link in the first post showing Bender defining irony... with a dictionary. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2krXq8fw90] I'm actually surprised that everyone overlooked that tidbit of self-depreciative acknowledgement about the misuse of term "irony".

This is Sparta?

OT: I've got no problems with the Duke. Other people shouldn't either. Come on. It's just a game.

Hmm. I always feel I'm missing out because I have never liked Ocarina of Time.

Sir, I believe your funbox is broken. I'd get you a new one, but it's unfortunately going to have to take seven years and a trip through a forest, a lake, and a volcanic mountain to find it.

Just stay where you are. I'll be right back. In seven years (that is assuming that the funbox manufacturer isn't a dick and won't also make me go through a tundra, a desert, another lake, and some really freaky place).

I agree. DNF wasn't a good game, but I didn't think it was that bad.
On the other hand, I'm not a huge Zelda fan, and OoT has never contended on my list of best games (best N64 game of all time is without a doubt Ogre Battle 64, with second place going to Golden Eye and third place being Mario Kart).

I hope Gearbox doesn't give up on Duke. If anyone can make Duke relevant again, it's Randy Pitchford and the crew at Gearbox.

Zelda's a game that ages quite gracefully. That's part of the reason why no matter how much anyone complains about too much Zelda, Nintendo will never stop earning money from both long-term Zelda fans and newcomers. You take Ocarina of Time and hold it up in present day light, and obviously it won't be nearly as good as it was a decade ago, but it'll still be a pretty damn good game even taking into account modern technology and gameplay.

DNF is an outdated shooter that sets itself apart with juvenile humor and shooting mechanics that were popular twelve years ago. Shooters hardly ever age gracefully, but when you take into account the fact that even for its time, Duke Nukem didn't really do that much differently from its competitors, it definitely can't even compare with any modern day game.
