You've decided to sign up for three years of isolation starting on January 1 2011. You will live in a colorless, featureless, windowless, soundproofed studio apartment with basic food and drink supplied on demand. You will have no interaction with any human or animal/pet, and have access to only one form of media for the entire 3 years.

Your goal: maintain your sanity

Their goal: compare your knowledge of the world over the 3 year period as seen through a focused media lens vs. the average person?s unfocused knowledge.

You may choose one (and only one) of the following types of media. All instances published in your chosen language between Jan 1 2011 and Dec 31 2013 will be delivered to you. Which media do you choose and why?
? Books ? select one genre only
? Music ? select a genre
? Staged productions (recording of) ? select a genre
? Videogames ? all standalone games (no multiplayer)
? TV ? select one channel only
? Radio ? select one station only
? Movies ? select a genre
? Newspaper ? select one
? Magazine ? select one
? Webcast/podcast/Youtube channel ? select one
? Twitter ? select one channel
? Blog ? select one

Books - Sci-Fi
Music - Post Rock (but I want this to be kept in the original language)
Stage Production - Musical
Video Games - Little bit confused do I get to choose one game or all standalone games come included?
If the first one I'm going to go Harvest Moon, its not my favorite game, but I think that would probably keep me occupied the most.
TV - TBS
Radio - Opie & Anthony
Movies - Drama
Newspaper - I don't really care I guess NYT
Magazines - Time
Webcast - SXEphil
Twitter - Kim Kardashian *Never kept up on twitter and shes the only one I know who does it*
Blog - Don't care

Of course, videogames. I just pray that no one deliberately gives me games with an Early Childhood rating on them, or I would certainly go insane. And I choose games because I basically grew up with them.

Also, I already live an isolationist life, but my room has a window.

Considering the effects of Natural Light Deprivation on the human condition, choosing a media and attempting to remain sane without some access to natural lighting would be doomed to failure from the start.
My best attempt would be with Videogames: Roleplaying to try and keep my mind engrossed in stories or perhaps in historical texts of nonfiction.
But ultimately you'd suffer tremendous issues like fatigue, muscle atrophy, and depression long, LONG before even your first year was up, much less your third.

I choose video games and although I'm probably not retaining my sanity in any instance (falsely assuming I had some to begin with), I would treat it less as a prison sentence and more as a form of liberation. I'd be a digital Alexander Selkirk.

Hmm, I'd have to go with video games as well as I already play majority stand alone games as it is. I can tell you right now without a three year study though that after those 3 years I wouldn't know jack about the outside world.

Magazine - Comics. If the government taxes them extra as such, I'm furking counting it.

On a month-by-month basis you can learn a fair bit about the modern world through comics. Hell, Deadpool's everywhere and he makes enough pop-culture comments to keep you up to date. That and there's enough variety to make sure you don't completely lose your sanity.

That, and if I'm engrossing myself as comic books as a media I can justify a couple sketch books and pencils to draw super hero stuffs.
