As I reinstall Left 4 Dead(the first one) from Steam I thought it well to ask about my reason for the un/reinstall.

Now, the game starts up normally with the VALVe logo, then the opening cutscene kicks in, if I try to skip it, the game crashes, claiming it cannot find "background.vtf." If I let the cutscene play by itself, the same error occurs.

On a side note, I have Garry's Mod 10, and a lot of objects have purple/black checkerboards on them, if you have a solution to that, that would be greaaaat.

EDIT: Both L4D 1 and GMod 10 were legally obtained.

Alternatively, you could right-click on Left 4 Dead in your Steam window, then go to 'properties'. Check 'Local Files' and then 'Verify integrity of game cache". If there is any corrupt data in your game folder, this should fix/replace/reinstall it.

WAIT DON'T DO THAT!

right click the game in your properties and click "VERIFY GAME CACHE".

It'll scan the game for missing/corrupt files.
Don't re-download, that's just foolhardy.

I read this post right after I deleted my L4D data... Now I must sit through the tedious install process.

Durr hurr. -.-

EDIT: But wait! I never emptied the Recycle Bin! YES!

I'll give it a shot, thanks mate.
Hold on - right click the game in Steam, then go to properties > local files > verify game cache. That'll check for any missing stuff.

If that doesn't turn anything up, try re-downloading it. If you still have no luck, go to the official steam forums and do a search: you're almost guaranteed a fix.

Sorry about that, I usually go the basic route and just go for a fresh start. This idea didn't even enter my head. Well, if this idea doesn't work ...verify next time? :| Soooorrryyy

Are the checkerboxed objects ones that came with the game, ones that you've seen on multiplayer, or from downloads you made yourself? If it's from the original objects, try reinstalling the game, hopefully that will reinstall any texture you might have deleted on accident or whatever, if it's other peoples objects then you might not have downloaded the texture from the server, and if it's from things you've downloaded off of a website, then it might be because it's a bad/incomplete download which you should try reinstalling to see if it works. (they also might be from other games that you don't have)

Kinda Off Topic, do you know of L4D custom maps? Ton o fun.

Anyway, hopefully the fresh install will do the trick for ya. If not, go with the advice of all these people. Verify the game cache.

See ya online. Maybe.

All right you guys, I did a fresh install of both GMod 10 AND Left 4 Dead and they perform beautifully. (The game cache verification didn't do anything.)

Thanks!

In case you're wondering;

I love the L4D custom maps, the City 17 campaign is a blast.

I always go with the sure fire way, I hate step by step trouble shooting haha.
