Meh, i just ignore it. I mean, i like video games, which is basically escapism.
What is following "the celebrities" if not other form of escapism?

My hobby has been judged long enough for me to understand why i shouldnt judge others.
You say you hate judging people. Its simple. "Just dont do it" (can i TM this?)

Saying "its a bad role model" is well.... true. But so are 99% games. Those things are not supposed to be role models. Your parents are supposed to be that.

I think its stupid, but far be it from me to tell that to people who CHOOSE to do so.

So in short - to me its a form of escapism, and who the hell am i to say mine is better.

This is what happens when you get rid of the aristocracy and monarchies, you get folk of class and standard and face replaced with people you can lose all face, class and standard and still achieve money, fame and... more money.

But seriously I never really liked celebrity culture, I understand it through, being nosey and having idols (even false idols) is nice and comforting, etc.

So all i keep hearing about is miley fucking cyrus and it got me thinking. There must be more of us out there who hate celebrity culture. Just everything about "celebrity" culture really fucks me off. I dont care if miley cyrus made an arse (no pun intended....ok i admit it) of herself at some shit award ceremony for who has the most generic pop music. I dont care when we see a picture of a celeb and told they are anorexic then a week later they put on a pound and are told they are obese. What sort of image is this for young girls and its not much better for young lads who are expected to spend all their time in the gym.

Not a very good one. Hence why we have a lot of the gender issues in our culture today. It's not the only reason for sure, but it's definitely contributing.

This is a culture centred around judging people and i cant stand judging people. Also why does culture feel the need to segregate us into different groups. Its just a way of judging someone without getting to know them first.

Just to point out, you keep talking about "culture" as if it's this living thing with it's own actions. "Culture" isn't segregating us into different groups. WE THE PEOPLE IN THE CULTURE are doing that. We've been doing this since the dawn of our species. Tribe vs tribe, male vs woman, god vs god, geographical location A vs geographical location B, etc etc. It's what we do. It's not a very pretty part of human nature, but it's there. We segregate, we seperate, we create Us vs Them scenarios all the time. It's just how we're wired biologically. It's something we have to actively suppress and work around, and we will probably be doing it forever.

I cant stand how we put these people on rediculously high pedastalls, give them so much money and influence. Then we decide to make every aspect of there life a peep show (although some of them choose this). Then we wonder why they completely fly off the handle

Its a horrible culture to be part of. Its a culture that promotes bullying and vanity and discourages getting to know different people and opening your mind and broadening your horizons. Its a culture which discourages free thinking and encourages people to be sheep and follow the corporate trends

Yep! That's humanity for you. And to be fair, it's not just western culture, EVERY human society has these traits to some degree or other. They emphasize others more than us perhaps, and vice versa, but it's still there. Look at the gender inequality in a place like India, and then tell me if giving girls body image issues is really worse. Yeah it's not GOOD, but women could be in a MUCH MUCH worse situation overall, here in this "culture" you keep talking about.

So i go back to my original point about miley cyrus. This is getting far more attention than the fact that a dictator is killing his own citizens with gas attacks and we (USA and UK) could be potentially be sending servicemen and women to syria and risking countless more lives BUT thats boring lets forget about that

George Carlin did a skit, saying roughly "A person's concern/interest in a particular tragedy is inversely proportional to his proximity to it." Again, it's just how we are as humans. Yet another thing we have to try and work around.

Hardly. I can't tell you what it means and I've been surrounded by stereotypical teens (from what I gather, the primary propagators of the vast majority of this irksome pop culture. terms included) for my entire high-school career, of which I just began the final year.

You know all that 'empire crumbling' stuff can be said about paying attention to video games instead. I really don't get how anyone on this site thinks they can be on their high horse about never wasting time.

The only thing that irritates me is that it gets on the news. We could be bombing syria anytime now, but instead we're watching Miley Cyrus twerking on the news. If the news started reporting on video games after a hundred thousand people died then yes, I would agree, that's stupid.

I barely knew anything about this prior to reading this thread. I knew something was going with Miley Cyrus, but I never what it was exactly.

With that said, I don't necessarily hate celebrities, as some of them are nice people that don't let all the fame go to their head, but I can't stand the culture surrounding them. I mostly avoided it until I worked a job where nearly everyone was obsessed with celebrity culture. I basically just hoped my lunch break came at the same time as the one other guy who wasn't into it that way I would have something to do other than watch the shows surrounding it. Unfortunately that didn't happen often, so lunch was generally the worst hour of my day. Eventually, though, I managed to tune it out enough to play Sudoku on my phone.

It's not just you. Practically everyone but the people engrossed in celebrity culture hates the media's obsession with celebrity culture. No-one but vapid teenage girls, mums with no lives, and boys with low standards actually like Miley Cyrus or any of the other just-old-enough-to-not-be-jailbait pop stars and their ilk.
