I would've done it = I would have done it

I would of done it = I can't write = I cannot write

Thank you.

This is more of a community announcement than a discussion but, to power my banhammer shield, what spelling/grammar mistakes do you notice the most?

This is my biggest annoyance too.

In my native language (Dutch) people seem to be forgetting 'willen' (wanting) is an irregular verb. Aarggh.

One that I see often:
"I'm defiantly getting this game."
Ooooh, you rebel. Don't listen to the man. You buy that game and make a stand. Oh wait...you meant to say "definitely".

Hmm... I think I'll go for the "There" "Their" and "They're" mistake... Seeing as it is incredibly common (As it involves 3 words being misused rather than 1 or 2)

Also "Alot"... It's supposed to be "A lot" I let this slide sometimes due to me not paying much attention to it for so long (I then came across http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/04/alot-is-better-than-you-at-everything.html and now I put that space in)

But I do let the "Would of" thing slide because it really isn't written too often and it's pronounced in a way where it actually does sound like "Would of" instead of an an abbreiviation of "Would have"

Commas go before 'but', not after.

Not if you use commas to enclose a fragment, as I did. If we have it your way the sentence goes:

"This is more of a community announcement, but, to power my banhammer shield, what spelling/grammar mistakes do you notice the most?"

The rule, if you can take the fragment out of the sentence and have it still make sense then the use is correct. That takes priority over the and/but comma placement. The fragment creates the natural pause that the and/but comma creates, so it isn't required.

Also, it depends on whether you're British or American. The Yanks teach that the comma goes after whereas Brits have it before.

PQE. Point, quotation and expla-fucking-nation. Ohhhh yeahhhhh.

My way would be writing a sentence with better structure. :p

Perhaps something like this:

"Since this is more of a community announcement and I want to power my banhammer shield, what spelling/grammar mistakes do you notice the most?"

Lately, my biggest pet peeve on the Escapist is threads titled "Recommend me a ...book/movie/show/etc".

First point; my sentence was, and is, perfectly functional.

Secondly, I'd sort out tense use first; namely, that'd be much more natural in past tense:

"I would've written a sentence with better structure." ;)

---

I post in those threads. I want to say "despite the obvious something", but I am now quite drunk. So, I know what someone likes is never summed up in an OP; but, I still share what I like in the hope that one, or even two, will discover and like it. That is better than me keeping schtum and those potential fans being forever ignorant.

That being said, read Iain M Banks if you want good Sci-Fi.

IJBM: Misuse of "its" vs "it's." Particularly painful when the offender doesn't remain consistent about which one is which.

See also, this [http://theoatmeal.com/comics/misspelling]. And also the apostrophe thing. Argh, Apostrophe Abuse even has its own damn .com! [http://www.apostropheabuse.com/]

Totally. I was just correcting your take on what "my way" would've been.

I am now quite drunk too! =)

And I love Iain Banks! Though I've been stalled in the early chapters of Against a Dark Background recently; his writing isn't something you can digest in small increments, you need to have time to dive in.

I think I've used the "this is pretty petty and it's basically how you say it anyway" post a few times now. So instead I'll just say that the things that annoy me the absolute most is people who use possessive apostrophes for plurals instead of possession. "Hey man look at all the tree's over there." "Look at the tree's what exactly?" Seriously gets under my skin.

The other thing would have to be people who go straight to the hyperbolic epitome of description. Epic, Horrible, The Best, Hilarious, quit using these words to describe the bus ride home or whatever!

I never saw this until I got out of school. Are people today just so dumb they can't be bothered to pass fifth grade English class? People need to stop texting in school and learn something.

I'm not entirely sure why, but it always seems to cause a little tick in the back of my mind whenever someone uses "Rediculous" instead of Ridiculous.

I totally agree with you! Its so annoying when people do stuff like that!

...I'm trying to get a sentence with "its" in it so that I could use "it's", but I couldn't think of one off the top of my head. You all get the idea though.

Why dus evryon tak gramarr an' spellin so seroisly? Its teh interneet. LOL LMAO.

Frankly I don't really care if someone makes a grammar or spelling mistake. Everyone makes one every now and then.

Now if it's for an essay, a speech, or something along those lines I can probably understand having to have perfect or near perfect spelling and grammar.

I have a bit of a hatred towards the word maybe. Just about every other time I write/type it in I end up spelling it maby the first time and it annoys me to no end. I also find it kind of ironic that I'm a bit of a Grammar Nazi when it comes to the work of others, yet I can't spell worth crap half the time.

There's also the third or so of YouTube commentators who couldn't use proper grammar if their lives depended on it.

My god why do some people feel the need to shine a spot light on other peoples mistakes, does it make you feel better? Does it make you feel big? It's the freakin' internet folks, free speech and all that.

And if you people must know, I always type 'alot' if there is no spell checker.
