And no! its not a low brow joke - The Eclipse in china has apparently been the longest total eclipse for a century, And the next longer one will be in 100+ years.

Now here in the UK i remember the 1999 eclipse (vaguely), and the next total eclipse in the UK isnt till late in the century.

What are your feelings about eclipses? personally i love them, Something as bright as the sun being blocked out by a piece of rock, being held up by nothing going around the earth and blocking out the sun (albeit briefly).

Just incidently astronomy is a hobby of mine (when its not goddam cloudy!).

EDIT: Thanks Mods!

Every so often Athe steals the sun and we need to sacrifice children to get it back.

I've only had one eclipse take place in my lifetime, while I was at college. It was a lunar eclipse, and even though I didn't get a great view of it, it was still pretty neat.

The only eclipse I care for was in 2004. If you don't know why then you do not live in Boston.

There was a solar eclipse in Australia not too long ago, and as a result scientists have used that incident to help them find life in outer space.

For those of us who don't, would you care to explain?

October 27th 2004.

A lunar eclipse occurs during the 4th game of the World Series in St.Louis. For those of us that are fans of Baseball that is the day that the Red Sox won there first Series in 86 years.

Buuuut since its not... I want to see a damn eclipse!
Sucks being stuck on a shitty little island in the middle of nowhere. ;.; No room to maneuver.
I plan to go on holiday to see an eclipse...

I've only seen one before, it was the one in 2007...?

It was a lunar eclipse. It was cool! I remember staying up and watching it through my window.

I can go all night... I mean...

OT: I 'saw' the UK one years ago, in Bournemouth it wasn't total and it was cloudy, but the whole sky did go incredibly dark during the day which was eerie, I hear during a proper total eclipse, in the countryside, all the animals and birds go silent must be very weird.

I'm pretty tuned to nature so I take notice of this stuff, I'l agree that Lunar eclipses are cooler. They happen more often and at night (all the cool stuff happens at night), somehow the moon being blocked out seems more devastating to me than the Sun. Plus you get the whole 'red moon' effect for a while

Honestly, I don't know the difference between solar and lunar eclipse, can somebody explain?

I've seen 2 eclipses before if I remember rightly. Not sure which was which though.

The only solar eclipse I've seen was the one in 1999, I was 6 at the time and was incredibly freaked out by it.

A solar eclipse is where the light from the Sun is blocked by the moon coming in between the Sun and the Earth. Happens during the day.

A lunar eclipse is where our vision of the moon (the light reflected off it from the sun) is blocked by the Earth coming between the Moon and the Sun (so no light can reach the moon and reflect back to us)

Due to the exact positions and size of all 3 masses in the solar system the effects to humans on the surface of Earth vary depending on their position relative to the celestial bodies in orbit.

Ugh.

i've seen a bunch of eclipses, they are really awesome to watch. i still remember walking around one night during a lunar eclipse and i had no clue one was happening, i looked up and saw there was no moon in the sky and then later on i noticed it was back.

Eclipses are just god accidentally stepping in front of the flashlight.

No really I read it in a book one time.
