Certainly didn't expect that. Consider me cautiously optimistic.

Trailer feels a little like a call-back to the Okami prototype

Also nice much of the team are Clover OGs. No Nakamura Ikumi tho? But she got her own studio now, so probably better for her to stay out from under Kamiya's shadow.

Didn't she go to space though? The final stretch of Okami kinda took the ancient mysticism out of the game for me, so I don't know what this sequel is gonna try.

Also, playing the original on Switch in handheld mode was a game changer for this title, so if the sequel is going to be on Switch 2 with touchscreen application, I might have to pick it up for that system.

Fuck yes. Okami is one of my all-time favourite games, and was my very first platinum trophy. Buzzed.

I can sort of see that, but space travel actually does play a role in Shinto mythology, so it's not out of place.

Yeah, but once you bring actual flying saucers into it, you lose me. I didn't mind the bamboo shoot rocket for the little Kaguya side story - it was cute. But Waka and Amaterasu being part of some space race... nah. I know the game is silly overall, but it still had that creepy mystical vibe, the way Zelda games do too. But then the game had worn out its welcome by that part anyway. Let's hope the sequel can do a better job at getting itself to the finish line.

Bro this is Ammy, she can just paint a torii gate and poof she's back!

Or it could be a prequel with OP buff Shiranui.

Or just take it to the future or in the heavenly realm, it doesn't need to take place on earth.

And I dunno, I kinda loved using the ps2 pad for the painting lol. I heard a lot of people say the painting was made for wii controls but I never had an issue with it before the Wii even existed.

IIRC, only Waka and Kaguya are from the Moon Tribe. Amaterasu just hails from the celestial realm. And at least the Ark of Yamato looks like a giant sail-ship rather than a modern UFO-- though the interior is a bit "sci-fi".

Yeah I totally get that tonally.

While it is neat that we're getting a new Okami, I can't say I was clamoring for a sequel. I do really like the first game, I just don't see the necessity for a sequel. Unlike other more traditional games that can stand to have clear gameplay improvments, Okami was so particular in its mechanics. I can't for example think of how to improve the Celestial Brush with the current controller lay-out (which is pretty much identical to how it was when the first Okami was released). The Switch port added touchscreen controls which made the whole mechanic seamless, but we're probably not getting that for the sequel.

There's a rumor going around that Platinum Games is suffering a brain drain, with a lot of its top talent leaving to join Kamiya at Clovers. Other rumors about a bunch of projects getting cancelled, rumor of mismanagement, rumors they siphoned funds from that Granblue game to spend on their own projects i.e. pulled a Gearbox. They also haven't had a commercial hit in a while, and they do afaik have no projects announced. Just conjecture of course, but if true, things may not be looking good for them.

Tho I guess much like Platinum carried on the spirit of Clover, Clovers might continue that lineage instead. And then PlatinumsGames in 5 years time.

That explains why they've been so quiet since Bayonetta Origins. It's still sad and disheartning though. They formed Platinum to get away from bullshit, only for that bullshit to come back from the executive class that has no idea what the fuck they're doing nor want.

One way would be to add colored inks, so you diversify spells based on color and then mix and match em too for combination spells.

Yeah platinum has been oddly absent for a while now. They could at least do some more ports of their switch stuff to get some more cash, I'm sure a ps5 version of Astral Chains would sell super good.

Too bad, Nintendo has full ownership of the IP. Nintendo should just buy Platinum and fire the idiots upstairs and at the top.

Maybe the wolf in the trailer is not Ammy at all, but her son Chibi from Okamiden all grown up.

But probably not. Everyone forgets Okamiden.

This has been really amusing to watch, half the people are screaming and jumping up and down, the other half instantly crying tears of joy.

Finally, a sequel with a female protagonist where nobody's going to ***** about her not being as sexy as before.

Well, then again....
Most of those fools don't even know Amaterasu is female. They never even played Okami. The closest they ever got was either seeing their "friend(s)" play it once in high school, college, or glanced at some YouTube gameplay for a minute before calling it "gay" and moving on to something else. If it gets to the point these fools want to fuck a fiction god wolf, then they need a special kind of help.

I remembered :c I don't remember a lot about it, but I remember finishing it. Apparently it's more a spiritual successor than a proper sequel? It'll be interesting to see what they pull from it, if anything

It's pretty much the same the same gameplay in the same world, but with the descendants of Okami's characters due to the timeskip, and scaled down due to handheld hardware limitations. Oh, and basically none of the devs who worked on Okami were involved, but if that makes it a spiritual successor, then most sequels of older franchises are. Spin-off is perhaps a more apt descriptor. As for what they'll pull from it, probably nothing, since there's not really anything to pull, aside from the characters.
