Amaterasu is female but the wolf she embodies, Shiranui, is male, he's referred to as such numerous times. You can see it in his pee humiliation attack even haha.

Basically they're an isshin-doutai being. Two selves within a single body. That's why she behaves like an actual wolf most of the time. That's actually Shiranui being in control. Amaterasu is not at all bestial like that.

The way I conceptualized it was that you only really play as Ammy when you pause and paint and when you make story decisions. Everything else is mostly Shiranui or a combination of the two. Shiranui is basically aware of her will and so he carries it out, but he does so with his own personality and mannerisms...or wolferisms I should say.


Oh and Yatsu DOES mention that he can see Amaterasu's true form and it being a "fair maiden" btw. So her being hot when in her actual manifestation and not while embodying a male wolf is canon. Which makes sense considering this is Okami too:

After past-Ammy* is wounded by Nechku, she returns to her time and convalesces in Kamiki until she reincarnates at the start of the game.

The "male" terms are largely from the rushed translation, and female wolves also cock their legs to piss.

Amaterasu herself has a real female form, she's basically similar to us, the player, in manifesting her will through a male wolf. You can play as character of a different sex without identifying as that sex yourself.

She wasn't "tapped" by Amaterasu at all-- she is Amaterasu.

Notice what when "Shiranui" arrives in the future, she does have the divine red markings and solar disc. There is no separate being, a white wolf without those markings. Both "Shiranui" and Amaterasu exhibit them, because they're one and the same.

She simply lacks them when power has been exhausted.
