Donkey Kong, how can an ape be a donkey?
The original developers were Japanese, and they were looking for an english translation for "stubborn ape." For stubborn, the word they found was donkey, and for ape they found kong. At least that's what I heard. It's still pretty dumb.
Close, he was supposed to be called "Monkey Kong" but they mistranslated the M to a D. At least that's what I heard.
Nope first guy was right. They called him that because they wanted him to be stupid ape. King Kong was the ape part and Donkey was the stupid part as in english translation calling someone a donkey means there stubborn and stupid. The american publishers laughed at them however but the name stuck.

Still beats "Ass-monkey".

Metroid

You don't see the Metroids for most of the game than they pop up scare you and... ...become Mooks for the rest of the game.
Yes, but they were the focal point around which the whole story revolved.
Not all the games.

True, but to call those games anything else would fail to establish them as part of the Metroid franchise.

Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando

Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal

... Wait, those are actually awesome. Uh... Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter. It's just so generic. 'The Next Chapter'? That is to game titles what 'Reloaded' is to movie titles.

Mass Effect is a bit of a weird name. I understand that it's the name given to the effect of Element Zero, but that's kind of like naming the Sonic games 'Newton's Laws of Motion' or 'Forward Momentum', or calling Portal 'Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle'. I guess the great thing about a name like that though is that it tells you nothing about the game. You don't associate it with anything but the game itself.

Worst game name I've ever heard though is, "Irritating Stick!" oO How can you go beyond that? Irritating Stick!

There is in fact a basejumping game on Steam called:
AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!!
It would've been more stupid if you completed the actual name of the game. I can't even think of a way to talk normally about the game without spurting its title.

Couldn't they have shortened it a bit?

Pretty good game, actually. One of those few licensed ones that actually got it "right" (like Goldeneye). ...but why does the title on the box have to be so long?
Really? Good? Did you get past the part where you inexplicably fall into the floor as you are being hunted by amazons, or the part where they think it is a good idea to make a survival game first person? (You need to see your body in a survival game people)

Oh, sorry sorry sorry! Didn't mean to do that! I don't even play WoW, but my friends never shut up about it so I get confused. :p

An edit is in order.

tim schafer is making a new game called "[b/]Deathspank[/b]"

that's the name of the main character too
It's Ron Gilbert who's making it, not Schafer, unless he's working on it with Gilbert than never mind this post.

And yes, that is an awful name.

Halo
Master chief, no matter however you spin it, is no saint.
its named after gigantic super-weapons that float around a planet in game. They look like the planet has a halo because of their large size even in comparison to the planet
