Was just reading about Wonko the Sane in Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Apparently, Wonko discovered that there was actually instructions on how to use a toothpick, promptly decided that the rest of the world was insane and built a 'inside-out' house and called it "The Outside of the Asylum"

He's not alone, I constantly feel that way after talking to some people.

Do you have a story to share about how insane the rest of the world is?

Oh, my goodness. I know that name. I've never read Hitchhiker's Guide, but I know that name.
Waspinator called himself that in an episode of Beast Wars.
...And now I know why. Man, you learn something new every day.

OT: No, I'm afraid I do not. Maybe I'm just different from the rest of society, but I don't really see the world as "insane".

Any world where a 2 year old girl has to learn to take care of herself because her parents hate her and do not wish to interact with her due to the color of her eyes is insane.

woah... i've had 'so long and thanks for all the fish' stuck in my head ALL DAY
then the first thread i open is about hitchhikers guide..

Anyway, to answer your question, society and day-to-day life just strikes me as a little insane. So it's not really one incident, more like one big continuous crazy town D=

I've always thought the story I was taught in school as a kid about the original Greek Olympics was a testament to insanity. It seemed so strange to me that they could all just stop fighting, go enjoy the games for a couple of days, and then when it was all said and done go right back to fighting. I guess it just seemed to me that if one was upset to the point of being willing to kill someone else over it, then they wouldn't put it on hold for some games.

I suppose time has dulled some of the naivety with which I originally heard this story, though I still can't help but feel it strange. We are a species with much potential, but all too often we are a sad species as well.

Well, instructions like "don't dry your pet in the microwave oven" make me doubt the sanity of the rest of the world every now and then, too. But then I just hit my forehead with my palm and move on with a few less working neurons in my brain.

I doubt they had any particular feelings towards their enemies, it's just politics. As were the Olympics.

Not quite insane there, just stupid and ignorant.

Like I said, time has dulled my naivety. I realize that now of course. Though I still find it sad that we'll kill one another over politics.

...Only brings us closer to death.

I thought the whole point of politics was to avoid a recourse to violence?

Perhaps at some base level that was the theory. Though people like myself would argue that the point of politics (or government more specifically) was to better the lives of the people. Still, if we're killing people, ending lives, we're not bettering anyone's life, so the point stands.

Though people have killed each other over far pettier things even than politics. I guess that the lack of respect we seem to have for the lives of our fellow humans, that's the element of this world I find so bizarre at times. That's what I might point to as insanity.

Builing a house and calling it the `outside of the asylum` in order to isolate yourself from everyone is a pretty insane act in itself.

I think that this story is a metaphor for sanity...sanity is just a kind of insanity which is agreed upon by the minority

I sympathize with him.

My jar of peanuts says "allergy alert: may contain peanuts".

Also, I got a memo at work through email on how to "assemble" the new coffee cups. With diagrams included. Yes, that's right. The big guys upstairs don't think we can figure out how to put a lid on a cup.

I mean, really?

Well given that throughout the History of Men, 99% of people believe in some kind of supernatural phenomena up till today and Atheists are considered immoral and evil

Your wife/girlfriend actually finds you less useless if you spend the majority of your life in a 3x3 cubicle staring at a computer.

Honor killings in certain parts of the world

It costs more to make whitebread than wholemeal, but wholemeal is more expensive due to 'Economics'

The richest in the world can spend hundreds on fish eggs while people are starving in the same country.

People prefer drinking themselves to death on alcohol rather than live in a constant weed binge that can't really kill you.

Also it is considered "unconstitutional" to teach creationism and Intelligent Design in biology class in school in America, due to the fact that it carries too much religious bias and overtones, but still gay people aren't allowed to marry eachother.

Lady GaGa is allowed to live, and to make what some crazy people call "music".

etc. etc.

It's a crazy world... And im not very proud to be a part of it...
