For occupational reasons that are none of you business I just got back from Alliance, NE. After what we had set out to do my partners and I realized we passed through this small town many times but never once stopped to see it's [a href=http://www.carhenge.com/]big time tourist attraction[/a] So we decided to visit

CARHENGE

The Druids would be proud.

For those philistines of you who don't know, Carhenge is a replica of Stonehenge using... well Cars. I was surprised to discover the artist/sculptor that lived there also made other sculptures out of cars my favorite being a giant salmon.

I was glad we stopped there and have resolved to see more tourist traps. Sure 90% of them are stupid and a rip off. Still, it's about the adventure.

Has anyone here ever actually stopped at a 'museum of corn' or anything weird like that?

To my knowledge this for the most part is just a North American phenomenon.

...but, since you have seen it in RL, i suppose it could be real...

edit: ot: no, it's not just the USA, unfortunately.

pah, the land around it is way too flat to be a proper replica of Stone Henge... the hilliness of the area is also an important feature of that area, you know.

I've once come across a house which was filled with concrete... then they removed all the walls and furniture (don't ask me how).

Very... interesting :p

I just figured europe had enough actually interesting old stuff around that they didn't need weird tourist traps.

I agree the photo does look photoshopped I just liked it because it was so corny. Google Image Carhenge to see many more angles.

the rainbow might be but that place is real. America is littered with stuff like that, the book American Gods talks about stuff like that.

it sux we don't have stuff like that in Canada, there's certain sites here and there, such as the big nickel in Sudbury and there's the giant ape way up north, forget where it is, and i'm leaving out Toronto and Niagara Falls cause they're a bit different.

the stuff we have up here more or less serves a purpose for where it is.

Uh...

Oddly enough I think here in Idaho we've managed to avoid a lot of this kind of silliness.

Unfortunately, the only thing people ever seem to know about this state is "You people grow a bunch of potatoes there right?"

We do have The Craters Of The Moon [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craters_of_the_Moon_National_Monument_and_Preserve] which is kind of an interesting place to visit if you're into that kind of thing.

I guess you could also go see The Experimental Breeder Reactor -1 [http://www.atomictourist.com/ebr.htm], that's pretty interesting also.

Saw the German Hygiene Museum when I was in Dresden, didnt go in though, it ironically looked dirty.

Also saw an advert for a sex toy museum when I was in Prague a while back, didn't see that either, the thought of a 600 year old dildo didn't really interest me

This place. [http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2211]

Apparently, it has a giant sombrero tower and a sex shop.

How exciting.

Haha. It'd be great if the sex shop was *in* the sombrero tower.

Visiting sex shops is one of the things I actually really enjoy about visiting places. Whether its seedy and hilarious or stylish and awesome, you can normally find something interesting inside.
