You know what I mean. One of the trademarks of the classic villain is his/her looks. And what does one look at first? The face (providing they have one). A daunting and terror-inducing mask or helmet beats all the kitten entrail-stained boots and long sharp knives in the world in the contest of intimidation. So who are the top intimidating characters for you? For me, it's gotta be these:

(And you gotta love these helmets)

(Oh, and if you disagree with my "helmets are teh best" theory, feel free to put in your two cents)

I always thought any biological hazard gear or gas masks were fucking horrifying.

That's why the Enclave always freaked me out

There's that helmet that Master Chief wears, but then I realized he was not the bad guy, during actual gameplay.

I find none of those intimidating. Maybe you come from Friendlybunniesland, and those are the most intimidating people you could gather up. And since when are scarfs scary? If anything it shows your weakness to cold weather.

Intimidating... Well hell, I sure can read...

Even so, I'm sticking with it. You can't tell me there's anything more intimidating than... This!

Behold the Prinny's Phanny Pack! Oooooooooh!

I think I might have to agree with you there. It was pretty creepy when, in the extended version of Return of the King, the voice os Sauron bares his teeth, sent a shiver down my spine. Although, he is sporting some pretty nasty headgear, so maybe it's a nice combination.

I agree with Darth Vader, not the others. What really made Darth Vader was the whole package, especially the raspy breathing. There's something creepy about some predator really close by, and you can't see it while it can't see you, but since you can hear its breath it's almost on top of you. That's scary.

Sauron's mask I thought was just tacky.

I disagree, headgear tends to associate with the grunts, the stormtroopers, COGS, ODSTs, Spartans, the combine police, the list goes on. That unified frightning presence, matched with the lack of humanity. The face can be a very menacing part, giving the presence of emotions, such as the Emperor, who made Vader his pawn, just another faceless tool, broken when Vader rebeled, and symbolised with the removing of his helmet, braking the bond. Just my thoughts.

I think the masks are so intimidating not because of the mask itself, but what it does, it hides the person's face (obviously), making the villain seem less human. Human beings have flaws and weaknesses, the mask/helmet can be seen as a symbol that cannot feel empathy or be reasoned with.
