SO.
In a few minutes I'll be setting off for a week of work experience, and I was wondering how I could possibly make this into a thread to get an awesome badge a view of the life of the Escapist browsers.

Now. A lot of people would end with a single question, saying "Where was your first work experience placement?"

NO.

I will not.

Because one of the ways to a good thread/discussion is GENERALITY.
Never pin it down to one small topic. Let it flow free! Like a unicorn in a rainbow.

Then I thought "Oh well. No-one will answer anyway. May as well give up."
But a hope in me raged on, fighting to burst free of my natural depression.
And suddenly..
BAM!
Like a beam of light, it broke through layer after layer of pessimism, until it shone through for the world to see, in all its glory!
And so, I grabbed hold of that piece of hope, and it sped me away to my computer, before I could become down again, and here I am.
Writing this thread.

I put towards you, the reader, my questions three.
Answer right, and you be
Alive and free.

Answer WRONG however
And you won't feel much better (Shut up. It rhymes)
Maybe a depressing letter? (I got stuck here)

So.

[li]Where did you go for your work experience week?[/li]
[li]If you didn't, where was your first working place?[/li]
[li]Or, if you're too young, where do you hope to work in future?[/li][/ol]

(Yeah, you only actually answer one)

..

..

Ok, [HEADING=1]GO![/HEADING]

Well, in Denmark its customary that in grade 8 or 9 you go out and annoy every single business in town and beg them to let you work for free for a week, unfortunately no one wants a annoying, useless and lazy teenager around for a entire week so they usually just make you do grunt work instead of teaching you anything about the work place, that is if you're lucky enough to find a place, if not the entire week counts as being absent, not the greatest system ever.

Anyways, i got into the accounting apartment of a insurance business, and all i did was stacking paper, setting up brochures and making coffee for the waiting room, it was the most boring thing imaginable, 80% of the time i didn't even have anything to do, so i sat in the grey waiting room just waiting for people to finish the coffee or mess up the brochures so i had something to do, after that experience being a crazy homeless person didn't sound so bad.

My first ever job was from work experience. I worked in a supermarket, and within three days the manager came and asked if I'd like to stay :) I stayed there for almost 2 years before I had to leave due to injury.

Advice: Work hard, don't get scared and if you're worried about something, ask your supervisor questions; it's the only way you'll learn. Also, prepare to be EXHAUSTED.

I think so, yeah. Well, maybe European. It's where school kids go work for free for a week to 'Learn'.
But it's usually just stacking books.

And well done. I thought it was pretty funny.

I went with a surveying/engineering company and it was... Interesting...

The very first day we went into a bush in the middle of nowhere to measure some boundaries and the bush was incredibly dense, had vines that were designed to trip you over and tangle you up, ants, mosquitoes, leeches (I went from never being bitten by a leech to four in one day) and brown snakes. I am glad it was just for work placement and not for real.

I volunteered for the Olympics in Vancouver. It involved helping Jazz and Rock bands around via Buses and the Skytrain. It was nice having free fares all over the city, and free grub at the venues themselves.

Hrm.. first Job was freelance carpentry for my Uncle.

First legit over the table job was retail in a mens department in a now disolved department store.

Come to think of it, It seems that almost every place ive worked has shut down within a couple years of me working there. HOORAAY! I AM THE ANGEL OF CORPORATE DEATH!!!

I spent one week sweeping up at at garden supply centre, well almost and entire week, there was that day I move large piles of bricks from one side of the shop to the other side, that was awesome.

My second week of work experience was shadowing a doctor which was pretty cool but I had no intention of becoming a doctor so I don't know how I worked that out.

Now I'm all grown, at least physically, I work as a QA tester for software. It wasn't my plan to work here but I actually really like it so I'm good.

Enjoy your work experience, remember it's not massively important it's just supposed to help you get an idea for where you want to aim.

Hooooly shit, I would have freaked. Being a Brit I've never seen a snake that wasn't behind a glass cage. And if I had a leech on me I would probably cry like a girl then try and do something I'd seen on TV like burn it off or scrape it with a knife and end up injuring myself horribly.

My nearest CEX.

It was amazingly awesome there, I spent most of the time stacking shelves or chilling with the others who worked there.

Working there was great cause everyone was into the same thing, turn up with a manga book and everyone asked what series etc.

I wish I could get a part time job there.

My first place of employment was at a local grocery store. For 2 cumulative years.

Not a pretty experience...

That was a nice OP, so ok..I'll bite:

My work experience began at a local veterinary clinic out in the London boondocks. It was pretty interesting having to deal with pets and their owners as the latter fusses over their respective pets. Most of the day was spent on inspecting dogs as they came in for shots, ticks and the occasional blood parasites.

It was pretty fun overall.

I worked at Evans. It's a shop for really fat ladies.
It was shit, they treat me like shit, I couldn't stand walking around for 10 hours and it hasn't helped me at all. I wish I'd gone to somewhere like Virgin (it was still open then) or HMV. I didn't even put Evans down as a choice.

Well, I'm back from my first day, and because this is MY DAMN THREAD I think I'll say how it was.

Mediocre.

Parts were boring, as I was standing around for 10 minutes every hour, doing nothing.
The boss is a *****. (The one that laughs at EVERYTHING, and pretends that "We're all co-workers here! All friends! ..
Now do what I say, dick brain, or I'll fire your ass so fast you won't even know it"

BUT

Customers love me, as I 'Improved the checking out wait" by making up stories, or narrating in an odd accent what I was doing.
Librarian's are all really nice (Aside from the boss, and quite a weird un-known job lady) and helped with it all, and even liked my jokes! (Crazy, right?)

SO

It was a long day with boring parts, and tomorrow I'm working until SEVEN, so I'm dreading that (Hey, I'm young. I'm not used to it) and all in all, it's an okay work experience.

7/10.

1.Where did you go for your work experience week? I work in a big office in a call centre, was actually very fun, I got to colour in a lot of pointless stuff and have unlimited amounts of tea, and starburst drink

2.If you didn't, where was your first working place? I did, but, my firt real paying job was in ASDA as a home shopper. Actually not a bad job, and the pay for my age back then (17) was very generous.

I spent my week helping old people glue macaroni to cardboard in an art centre.

The work was boring, but the days were short. Also, I learnt that an industrial stapler (the ones that go through wood) can and will cut a bee in half from 8 paces.
