I have recently ignited a deep love of One Piece, after discovering the dark, evil grip that 4kids had around it's throat. To any of you who don't understand what I mean, One Piece is insanely popular over in japan, however when dubbed for the west 4kids attempted to change into an entirely kid focused anime, from bad overly silly dubs, to removing a black character.... I wish I was joking.
All so Pirates are cool :p

I made this thread for anyone who wants to recommend a good anime, or in general give a few tid bits of information about one.

Not the most direct discussion ever, but I hope this thread turns out well :D

I will be frank and honest: I do not like anime.

Though, I have seen two movies which I enjoyed very much, despite the fact that they are anime.

Paprika
and Perfect Blue

Both were made by the same director, and they're great films.

Anything in particular that you don't like about the, most people tend to enjoy anime after seeing Akira or Cowboy Bebop, the latter due to it's western influences I guess.

The most recent one I'm following is a series called "Tiger & Bunny," its an action show about a competition between corporate-sponsored superheroes.

ITs pretty good!

I've been going through Team Four Star's Dragon Ball Z Abridged, and it has reminded me just why I liked the show in the first place. Also, Goku is basically Superman isn't he?

I guess that recommending Howl's Moving Castle will be pointless considering how many people are going to recommend Miyazaki films, but I just wanted to put that one out there. I watched it recently and realized that in Disney's dub Howl is Batman. That was awesome.

Watch Baccano too. That's a great show. As are many dozens of other ones I've watched.

Oh! Baka and Test! That is also very good!

Been watching Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid since yesterday. Just finished episode 9 and it's really good. The drama is performed a lot better in this one compared to the first. Yep, dunno what else to say.

EDIT:

Also, just finished K-on!! the other day and I gotta say it was absolutely brilliant. I just love that series so much. It's really funny but at the same time it can be a real tear jerker as well which reminds me. Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid can do the exact same thing lol. Can't wait for the movie to come out.

I wouldn't insult him personally :p
Superman I find dull as he destroys everyone with such ease, and just has too many powers to be interesting, the worst thing is his weakness, basically every time anyone goes near him with kryptonite he can't do anything.

What is it like, it's on my list to watch, but that's currently a mile long still, only made worse with me getting into One Piece.

It's understandable. It's basically the same as people not liking the entirety of books or video games.

Anyway, a very good anime that I would recommend to people who are already familiar with the medium to watch Now and Then, Here and There. It's a very good anime that uses the setbacks of 90s animation styles to its advantage.

Also, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, because it's really good.

I'm actually getting interested in Darker Than Black because it's a story set in the modern/futuristic world centered around a Chinese character. Surprising, considering the deep-seeded hatred that Asians have against each other.

I mainly don't like the style that it's drawn. That's my biggest issue. Also, I had been turned off by many stereotypes (like giant robot fights, outragious hair colors, chibi, etc.). I understand that not all anime has these, but the prejudice has stuck since. Also, my friends are into anime that are weird and look childish (Bleach, something about alchemy, one about an assassin -with a green haired character ugh-, one about if countries were people, and others.) They would get me to watch one episode, and I would have no interest in seeing the next.

Paprika I saw on accident, because I recorded it without knowing it was anime. When I started watching it, I decided to continue, only because I had nothing better to do. Ironically, it turned to be one of my favorite movies, mainly because It doesn't have the above stereotypes (though there is a giant robot)

I found out about Perfect Blue from a Cracked article, saying Black Swan ripped it off. I learned it was by the same director as Paprika, so I gave it a shot. Ironically, I found it better than Black Swan.

Reborn turns to shit when it decides to turn serious. It takes a plot line that was made for a joke and tries to make it into something seriously pointless. How the fuck was Baby Hitmans ever meant to be taken serious. What bullshit. They also replaced poke balls with frikkin boxes, wtf?!?!?

Sorry if I'm being nitpicky, but that's kinda missing the point of Superman entirely. What makes him interesting is how he reacts to a world where he is the perfect being. What is the point of having so many powers and yet being so quickly crippled in a world where he can't stop crime altogether.

Superman is much more interesting on a psychological level than a physical one.

But anyways, Goku still is basically superman. He's the sole survivor of a blowed up planet (and like superman, others survived as well), is raised as a guy's son until he discovers his power. Of course, Goku comes into his power much earlier, turning into a five year old whirlwind of ass kicking.

But there are a load of parallels between the two of them.

Also check out this Linkara video. Specifically the beginning of the video talks about why Superman is the way he is, and the rest is about just how badly you can screw him up by changing his fundamental aspects. http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/linkara/at4w/3252-superman-at-earths-end

I love both those films aswell, the director, 'Satoshi Kon', is my favourite because his work is so very imaginative, delving into dreams and other places of facination. You should check out all his stuff. Paranoia Agent is the only series he's done, it was pretty impressive, worth it. Unfortunately he died last year, he had so much more to offer. :(

Agreed on there being loads of parallels, I get what you mean by psychology, but that only goes so far, and ofc doesn't feature in every comic or tv program.

Its sometimes hard to find animes that dont have the over the top facial expressions.

...something about it just irritates me, especially when the anime is serious.

Its not bad to put a bit of humor in a serious anime but the huge heads sorta kill the atmosphere.

Theres only like....3-4 animes Ive seen that were serious and didnt have those big heads

Well, when you're working with something as long running as superman, you have to pick and choose to get the best results. Its like what Moviebob said about Batman on the last Big Picture. People just got lazy and made up the excuse "because he's batman" as if that somehow excused them from actually explaining themselves.

For the record, here are some of my recommendations for learning about Supes the way he's meant to be.

for comics, look up "All Star Superman" (but avoid AS Batman and Robin at all costs)

for movies, look up the first two Christopher Reeve films.

and for TV, go for Superman TAS and both Justice League shows.

OT. Anyways, another show I did like was Code Geass. At least, I did like it before they decided to drive it into the ground within the first episode of R2.

Sadly I stray away from DC, as I tend to not like many if any of their heroes, excluding a select few. I will check out the other recommendations, cheers.

Anime was a big part of my growing up, and I still watch it; I still enjoy it a great deal. A lot of people say it's a hella nerdy thing (like my fiance). So what if it is? I embrace the nerdy! I have a lot of favorite animes I enjoy watching, but two of my favorites have got to be Trigun and Cowboy Bebop. I can remember laying in my bed watching those two shows on Adult Swim (when it was still good) before I went to bed every night.

But also while watching animes, I much prefer to watch them in Japanese with the subtitles. There's very few animes that I will watch in English; Bebop and Trigun being two of them. They were dubbed well, but most animes that are dubbed, aren't; in my opinion, anyway. Recently I started re-watching Naruto, and out of curiosity, I found an English episode online. After hearing Naruto's English voice say two things, I felt like I wanted to shove a screwdriver into my eardrums; his voice was so irritatingly annoying.

Katekyo Hitmaan Reborn turned to shit when it got serious? I would say it is the exact opposite. The first 20 episodes were the shittiest part of the series (Not that I think that they were actually shit. Just the least good.). And there was always a legitimate reason behind why Reborn is a baby. *Spoiler* He was a human before who was turned into a baby due to a curse *Spoiler*. I don't see why you can't take the show seriously as a whole just because you can't seem to take reborn seriously. While it did basically pull an Aizen chasing saga bleach move on us with the Future/Byakuran Arc which was a little bit dull because everyone seemed to be a bit to over powered and it dragged on for too long, the rest of the series is great (IMO). Who ever said that the plot line was made for a joke. You might have just assumed that from the first episodes, but I doubt that the author didn't foresee that his own story would take a turn for the serious after 20 episodes worth of chapters and just suddenly decided, "Hm, I'm going to turn a slice of life comedy into a serious fantasy action story!". And as for the pokeballs to boxes, I think that your just too fixated on pokemon, so I'm not even going to get into that because there's no point.
