I find that so long as you come up with a relatively easy to grasp question - preferably something slightly controversial - and post it around the time of day when the Americans are invading the boards, you'll get a decent amount of replies. (For example, I once had a 13 page thread running that simply asked whether Paedophiles should be put in jail. This was before the Paedophilia-thread ban though.)

I have contemplated trying to defend pedophilia, in the sense they are vilified to much, but I thought due to the normally more adult members of the Escapist, many of which are parents (Who I regard as good posters) I would avoid the flame war of a topic.

It's Fairy Tail not Tale.
It's awesome and has a kick-ass soundtrack. Worth trying unless you're allergic to talking about protecting friends (or nakama as it is called there).

Gintama is one of the best things I have ever seen. The random humor is fine (or great in Gintama's case) but then the serious arc (like benizakura or the underground town) kicks in and it has so much more impact.

I would recomend Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. It's the other best thing I have ever seen.

Believe me, there is no having posters stay rational when you bring the issue of paedophilia up for debate. I've had people say they literally wanted people to be killed the moment they came out as a paedophile. I've even been called a paedophile myself because I try to defend the principle that a person should be allowed to draw whatever they like so long as they aren't hurting anyone.
I don't know if you noticed it when it was happening, but there was this period where there were several threads about paedophilia going on every week.
It got so bad that the it earned its own mention in the forum rules.

But yes, I agree. Paedophiles are generally unfairly vilified. People don't seem to be able to accept that "paedophile" does not equal "child molester".
Trying to explain that to them is a bloody nightmare though.

I've only watched a couple of Animés, but I absolutely LOVE Lucky Star. If you haven't watched much animé, and have been told you won't get the references, don't listen. It's still awesome.

Okay maybe you can help. I love Lucky Star too...but i cant explain why. I mean in theory its the worst thing ever. No relatable characters, no real plot, no challanges for the characters to overcome. I just went into a trance when i watched it. Popped out like 13 hours later saying "That was fucking awesome"...Care to explain why you think its so good?

The only anime I've really seen (and enjoyed) is Berserk. I went out and tracked it down after playing the Dreamcast game some years back. Most anime makes me want to claw my eyes out with the nearest sharp object I can find but Berserk was pretty damn good. I still watch it start to finish once a year or so when I sit a random friend down and make em watch parts of it.

To any of you who don't understand what I mean, One Piece is insanely popular over in japan, however when dubbed for the west 4kids attempted to change into an entirely kid focused anime, from bad overly silly dubs, to removing a black character.... I wish I was joking.

some random minion, but ofc many characters are made comic relief and can't be taken serious due to silly dub, in the dubbing by 4kids.

I'm a big Gundam fan and any Gundam series is highly recommended (except for anything with SD in the title, or SEED and SEED Destiny). The absolute greatest Gundam series, though (and this is definitely an answer you won't get a lot) is "Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in a Pocket." I dare anyone to finish watching it without tearing up.

Also, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou is a great anime. It's really short, more like promos for the manga than anything else, but it's relaxed, meditative pace is really one of a kind (or at least it used to be). You've never seen a post-apocalyptic setting like this.

Rock Lee and Gaara by far one of the best fight scenes ever, but anything after that falls into the 3 episodes of talking about each others feelings with a rare punch or kick involved, all the while stuff with spin off filler.

No, even if you don't watch anime, you know what naruto is. Naruto fans have made sure of that . I thought so the show was terrible from episode 2 when they revealed the cast of generic unoriginal characters to be honest, but opinions are opinions.

Also, World God Only Knows. It's a dating sim parody, and it's bloody hilarious.

'Now and Then, Here and There' I didn't really enjoy, in-short its background is about a barely-able military force that enlists kids into its ranks, the series over all didn't get to me at all and its hard to take seriously when all the main characters are kids except two or three, its protagonist was too naive to be liked.
However, I kept it in the suggestions list of mine in case you enjoyed it. Its a 'light' animé really.

If you haven't seen it, 'Love Hina' is totally worth the watch. Its hilarious. Black Lagoon is like 'Love Hina's' opposite, however it's still just as funny but more action than romance.

I'll spoiler tag each show into it's own little section

Spoiler: First off: Mawaru Penguin Drum

is awesome. It's from the director who gave us the mind fuck of a series, Revolutionary Girl Utena,and it shows: themes of incest,funny background antics, revolutionizing the world. The story concerns 2 brothers trying to find a magic mcguffin in order to save their sister's life. However the resulting search and events that follow is where the story flies off the rails into a large intricate web of relationships,intrigue, and the inter workings of the world(that may sound much sillier than I intended)

The series also has a fair amount of humor despite the serious story One of the sources is the sibling's penguins(only they and certain others can see), they're off in the background just having there own little subplots that are enjoyable to watch. Ranging from sewing with the sister,Himari,to helping one recover from injuries by showing him porn mags.

Spoiler: Also this scene is worth mentioning

Currently only up to episode 19 has been released so get started now to catch up for the hopefully kick ass finale.

Spoiler: Wandering Son

A winter anime that sadly got eclipsed by Madoka Magika(more on that later). It's a melancholic slice of life about an adolescent cross dresser. The characters for the most part are likable and you get a feel for their motivations and despite the fact that this could easily become angsty it never goes there. I felt bad for the lead when he finally goes to school as a girl and it backfires horribly. It's a very sweet and honest series that deals with sensitive issues well but it's not without it's problems. The art is overly shiny, think Orimo taken to 11, and I had the worst time identifying who was who. t didn't help that everyone had a bevy of nicknames and other things to be called. Also,and this is not really it's fault, due to the tsunami that struck Japan;the series had to combine eps 10&11 and we lose a few vital plot points that appear in the new episode 11.

Also this is where I'm addressing Madoka Magika: I like the series but it is very over hyped.Try and go into it with as little expectation and enjoy it.

Spoiler: Usagi Drop

Holy hell is this show adorable.The story is as follows: a man(Daikachi) adopts his deceased grandpa's 6 year old daughter(Rin) and they build a life together. What follows is one of the most heart warming series around. It provides great character arcs for Rin and Daikachi as they grow to trust each other and Daikachi learns what it means to live for some one else. Rin will make your nut bladder explode into confetti and want take to her home with you(Rena style)the greatest part is she feels like a real little girl and her best friend,Kouki,acts like a real little boy; laughing at poop jokes and being reckless. It's never angsty and uses actions over words to make their relationship feel genuine. The art is hard to describe,it looks hand drawn and has a bit of a story book feel. Also the ending song is excellent and adorable like the rest of the show

Spoiler: Some comedies

Farewell, Mr Despair: Probably Shaft at it's finest,off the wall animation to nice compliment Koji Kumeta's off the wall humor.

Baka to Test:The show proving that being an idiot isn't all bad the show has a few big sources of humor: wacky slapstick in stock anime scenarios, Hideyoshi being so pretty that everyone treats him as a girl(much to his displeasure) and at least for the dub,the Ben stein esqe narrator. There also a plot about a war between students using what are essentially Pokemon with stats based on test scores.It's dropped after episode 2 for plot reasons and comes back for episodes 11 and 12.

Colorful: It's a Shaft work that's not made by Shaft, with a kicking punk theme song and some of the most perverted men around. A show dedicated to the art of the panty shot and is ecchi in it's purest form. The show follows around various men trying to look at womens underwear. There's no real plot and it's mostly played for laughs, the last episode being a 5 minute build up to a singular panty shot.It's a decent show to watch in short spurts as the premise does wear thin after a while.

Magical Witch Punie-Chan: If you enjoyed the Bludgeoning angel series then you'll probably enjoy this. It's less violent than that series but still has the same brand of over the top humor this time focusing on parodying the magic girl genre. It also contains one of my favorite jokes of all time. seriously I won't spoil it just go watch it(it's a short OVA series it won't take long).

Hidamari Sketch: The anime about nothing.Seriously nothing happens, there's no deeper meaning it's just 4 girls(6 in season 3) living life and having fun while being as cute as humanly possible. The two problems are the pacing,it's atrocious, though it gets better in season three and the 2 new girls from season 3 really kind of try and fill a niche that current characters already occupy and thus the new girls have no real identity.

Ben-to: A new comedy this season that takes buying half price food and turns it into an all out war. It's Serious business to the extreme with touches of ecchi and make a delightfully over the top show that is fun as hell to watch.

Spoiler: EDIT:Galley Fake

I've only watch the first 5 episode and they all have been great. It's about a guy who's the House of the art world with less bitterness. Each episode focus on a piece of art and usually something to do with forgery. The soundtrack has a jazzy feel perfect for it's 1920 New York setting. It's just fun to watch this man do what he does.

Spoiler: Time to Eve and Haibane Renmei

GO FUCKING WATCH THEM! I'm no going to spend a long diatribe on why you should watch them just go do it. Like now, this is the final part of this post. so drop what your doing and go do it, you won't be disappointed

And I'll add a few, though I haven't really kept up with this season's releases (work, damn the concept!):

Ergo Proxy, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (which I will continue to inflict on people until they realise just how good it is), le Chevalier D'Eon, Gankutsuou, RahXephon, Gunslinger Girl (or Il Teatrino, but not both) and Fuujin no Monogatari.

Naruto, go ahead anime hipsters light me on fire. I think its has a great story, relatable characters, great action scenes, and great sayings. I would also recomend fairy tale, for its fight scenes, story, and random humor. (My avatar is Zancrow from Fairy Tale, that's how much I love it.)

This, Fairy Tail is one of the best animes have seen so far, the characters are awesome, the music is just amazing and It has some of the best fight scenes I've seen.
Also I enjoy Naruto as well, it's not my favourite but I still watch it from time to time.

In my own opinion and from experience I've noticed that people who say they hate Naruto can be split into two different groups. The first is the people who've watched it and didn't like it. Which is fine that's their opinion. Then there's the second group people who hate the show because it's cool to hate it and it's main character. But Naruto has really grown he's actually pretty cool now. (He did defeat the Leader of Akatsuki which is quite a feat.)

As for the fillers, they exist for a reason, granted they can become tiresome but fillers exist to prevent the manga from catching up with the anime, it's nesessary.

More of my favourites include Baccano, Eden of the East, Code Geass, Hitman Reborn, Hetalia and Deadman Wonderland, although the Manga is better the anime was still great.

To be honest, I don't see why people get so riled up about that show.
I really enjoyed it when I watched it, but I didn't do so under some pretense that it was a horribly deep and emotional story.
I found it suitably dramatic and dark, and the plot was sufficiently engaging.
I don't recommend it in anime threads anymore though, since it invariably causes all the people who think something can't be art if it contains fanservice and all the guys who think the show is far deeper a work than it is to break out into an instant heated debate regarding how great/pretentious Elfen lied is.

Me and you have quite a load of things in common.
We both love Clannad and Elfen Lied,
Judging by my avatar you can tell what I love.

Clannad to me is my top anime and always has been. The story is cute, dramatic and funny, the characters have their own past and their own problems which eventually get solved by the main protagonist. I loved the fact that there was another season (Afterstory), I was amazed by that season., and thats how I bought all the DvDs.
Its sad that some people don't like Clannad

I liked Elfen Lied, at the time I watched it (I brought the DvD set), I didn't know about the hate. When I had finished watching it I found it really intriguing, it was dark and gory (well to me), but all the characters had a connected and mysterious past and I just found it awesome to watch. I didn't notice the fanservice until you said about it. >_>

I would totally have bought the Clannad dvds if it wasn't for the fact that the only time I've managed to come across them, they were expensive as all fuck.
I bought Elfen lied, Welcome to the NHK and FLCL for a very reasonable price at the same shop though.

Clannad holds a special place in my heart as the only story that's ever made me shed a tear.
In my defense, it was only one tear, and it was when T and U were on the way back from the flower field on the train.
That scene's some heavy stuff.
