I'm just amazed that they managed to butcher the Escapist's design so much.

I wonder why they didn't copy the navigation location as well. I mean, you read left to right, top to bottom so if your eye is already at the bottom right when you're done reading a page... oh well, they may have liked the look of your articles, but they failed to grasp the usability and intuitiveness. They also forgot to center the template within the browser window... and their margins are questionable... and...

How hard is it to save the HTML through the web browser? They can't even do that right, those no-talent hacks! ;-)

While looking, I inadvertantly discovered a small bug in my own code that snuck in during our portal launch. It was only ever an experimental feature, and will hopefully be made irrelevant by browser functionality, but still. ;)

Big: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/issue?s=125
Normal: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/issue?s=100

Still, as the original architect of the layout, I would prefer those that imitate take the time to learn how and why it works, and take away knowledge of the design concepts rather than a duplicate of the code. It really kind of irks me to see that their included styles have a bunch of extra lines that don't do anything at all in that layout. In a perfect world, they'd also make their own improvements, which I would (of course) immediately look at and evaluate for inclusion into our stuff :p

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to have something out there that others think is worth imitating. I'm very proud of the work we've done here, on the journalistic, artistic, technological, and design fronts. I'd just rather people see our work and be inspired to do something similar on their own, rather than just doing what we've already done.

Agreed. I'm more or less responsible for the overall design of The Escapist and one thing I've always been considering since we launched, is how to improve the look and design. I find it confusing that someone who obviously runs a fairly complicated site would choose to disregard the chance to improve upon our work. Why wouldn't they?

Obviously, our primary goal was (and continues to be) to spearhead a new form of game editorial and content. It's been our hope that this would slowly tune the industry as a whole into the idea of evolving. Because we believe it's time to evolve. Editorial, game design, web design, methods of communicating to communities and ways of sharing new ideas. By all means, adopt these philosophies and use whatever you like (Some already are, such as Games For Windows [http://www.gamehelper.com/features/061030/rw_feature_page1.html] [formerly CGW]), but I implore anyone who does to attempt to improve upon the base we've created - for the benefit of all who enjoy games.

Thanks Fletcher - we've got a lot more coming in early 2007 - a complete reboot for Gamehelper. We hope you'll stick around to check it out!
OK, OK. Now you're just being self-aggrandizing. Tell it to the ad sales people. Move along :)
