This past week I have gotten about 3 hours of sleep a night because of the building i"m staying in lacks any airconditioning. I can't stand it.

What keeps you up at night and give up attempting to sleep and instead deciding to actually make a day schedule that incorporates the more hours you spend awake?

Nothing really.
I can barely last 18 hours a day as it is.
Speaking of which, I should have been in bed 2 hours and 30 minutes ago.

DSPS. It's damned hard to get to sleep at a 'normal' time when your 'normal' time makes you only start getting tired at 6am...

Heat.... that is about it.

But on the subject, it happens too frequently where I am laying in my bed, viewing my television, in a dark room, barely lit. I look a little to my right, at the wall hugging my bed.... and behold, what is this? A dark, small, moving blob on my wall?..... I stare for a moment, then I realise...

FUCKING SHIT ITS A SPIDER

NOW I GOTTA KILL IT, FUCK

I can't sleep til its dead....

There are two things that can keep me up at night.

The first is deep thought. If I have something I need to think about, sleep time is the time I cut out to make room for it.

The second is the sound of my heart when I rest my head on the pillow. I can hear every time it beats, and it's really annoying.

Honestly, I can't sleep unless I have a fan going, it's cold in the room, and I have a large blanket around me. Otherwise I won't sleep until I pass out.

At the moment, the only thing that gets in the way of sleep is the Escapist.

Thank god for basements. :D

I have insomnia. Not you average "oh, I can't sleep, I've been trying for 20 whole minutes", but rather I cannot sleep for more than 3 or 4 hours at a time, if I can even fall asleep at all. And it's not like I don't need that sleep! It's been going on for more than 2 years.

I've tried 4 different prescription sleeping medications, and only one worked. Lucky it's non-habit forming and doesn't leave me like a complete idiot in the morning.

I really pity you, OP. I know the pain of really wanting to sleep and not being able to. I'd say it's one of the worst sufferings many people will experience in their lives, especially as the physical symptoms of sleep deprivation kick in.

Have you tried a cold water bottle? Or putting a damp towel over a fan?

This. It is currently 0631, I will be unable to sleep until 0700 at the earliest, so I'll get up later in the day meaning this sleep pattern will continue.

I'm glad someone else experiences this, my GF keeps insisting i'm a freak. She keeps asking me why I have the fan on AND have a blanket. Like it wasn't already obvious :p

Ants.

I once woke up, because I felt something tickling me, and when I turned on the light I found out that my bed was covered in ants. Did not manage to sleep much that night.
Wow, that's like straight out of a horror film, if by ants you mean hundreds.

OT: I'm an insomniac, I don't get much sleep. The escapist doesn't help much either...

I can't sleep when I'm anxious or upset. I toss and turn and roll things over in my mind until pure exhaustion finally blacks me out for 2-3 hours. Then the cycle begins again.

Yeah, my university still has finals week to go and then I get to go home and take up residence in my parents' basement. Thank god for that but they don't like me there, they'd rather me be upstairs.

In that case, I will definitely try your makeshift airconditioning idea. It sounds really smart, if i had the equipment to create large amounts of ice and hold it in a large bucket I would totally make my room icy cold. : D A little overboard? Perhaps your damp towel will work too.

Good luck with your struggles for a good night's sleep!

How is that a problem?
It just means you're one of us.

Either stress or this site, both seem to happen regularly, I get to bed at like 3AM then get up at 9 AM and repeat

I can't sleep when I know I need to. For example I have to wake up in five hours and I still can't sleep. Also it's good to see that I'm not the only one on the Escapist at 1:40 in the morning.

My brain commonly stops me.
If I'm lying still for more than 30 mins I usually start thinking about stuff
