In the states, today is Veteran's Day, where we honor the people who served for their country. In this thread, just say a 'thanks' to any family members you know who served. Non-Americans can do it too, just say someone you know (family, friends) whom fought in one of your nations wars.

For me, my uncle served in the 173rd Airborne Division (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/173rd_Airborne_Brigade_Combat_Team_%28United_States%29) in Vietnam. I've heard from my other relatives he lost most of his friends during the fighting that took place there. He rarely ever talks about it, either.

My Grandfather also served in Vietnam, in the USMC and rose to the rank of Sergeant Major.

Thanks for your service to America.

In Canada it's Remembrance Day.

I want to thank all the service men and woman from all countries who go out and do the stuff that needs doing that I do not have the balls to do.

Juno beach will always be remembered as one of the greatest sacrifices by the Canadian Armed forces. Good on you boys, you kicked the shit out of the Kraut fuckers.

Remembrance day in Britland.
Nothing really happened to be honest, I found a poppy on the floor and started wearing that. That was kinda cool.

Also, my friends thought the TF2 soldier update would be today, needless to say they were disappointed.

Remembrance Day over here in jolly ol' Blighty, but whatever.

But yeah, respect and gratitude to all those in the armed forces, giving up their time and their lives in some cases. Also to my grandfathers and great grandfathers who fought in the wars, and to their wives and families for coping with wartime life at home, something which was not at all fun according to my Gran.

"Non Americans can do it too"

Haha.

The date and day originated here, in the UK.

And yes, we did our bit. The silence, Last Post, and all that.

It's the first veteran's day without a World War I veteran. Their generation have all passed on--it's sad, really; those men were living history, and now they're gone.

In memoriam.

Thanks to me.

I like to remember each and every person I served with, and to remember everyone that lost their lives in that miserable place.

I produced a nice 15 minute long piece for the radio station I work at.
Played Taps, read 'In Flander's Fields', everything.

My Grandfather fought in the Dutch underground in WW2 and my uncle was in Vietnam, so I always end up thinking of them on Remembrance Day. A lot of good men lost their lives, or had them ruined, for our safety and freedom.
Lest we forget.

Sadly now, we are losing the WWII generation now and I think they are tying their best to record as much of what happened to them so we can remember what happened during that time period. Sadly, it's something we failed to do so with the veterans of WWI.

it's kinda of hard for me to think about honoring our vets on this day after the that idiot major(hasan) in Texas and knowing that the gulf war vet, John Allen Muhammad finally got his death penalty yesterday.

-Dissapointment through the air is quelled by the sound of the last post.-

Shame really.

Your Father and cousins ARE veterans in that they served their country (whether mandatory or not). In Canada during WWII we had the draft, thus if called upon, service was mandatory. Would you say that those drafted are not veterans? That would be highly disrespectful.
Yea but my cousins did really do anything except pretty much vacation around Greece on the military budget. Honestly, the Greek military is a joke. They only serve for like 8 months anyway. I remember talking to my cousin over facebook when he was supposed to be patroling the streets

I guess I could call my dad a vet, seeing as he went to other countries (Cyprus) and served for the mandatory 32 months that they had back then.

Please Squid94, neither the time or place.

The date and time originated with the cessation of hostilities (WWI) on Monday, November 11, 1918 at 11:00 AM. Armistice Day was observed across the entire Commonwealth for the first time in 1919. It was also celebrated in other countries such as the United States.
Badly phrased, I'll admit. How about:

The U.S has less to do with it than European countries.

Happy?

My schools silence went to shit when an experiment in a chemistry class set off the fire alarm, although the bell goes at 11:00 so I stayed silent for 2-5 minutes:)
