Quite a good personal statement, I may add. How the hell did you get into particle physics? I mean, sure, I enjoy physics, hopefully going for astronomy, but particle physics is like the Demon's Souls of science.

I think that Half-Life was actually what got me into particle physics. I saw weapon names like the gluon gun and the tau cannon and had no idea what they meant, so I looked it up and found the whole thing terribly fascinating.
