So I've just installed Vampire: The Masquerade, and to run it I have to install an unofficial patch. So I download the patch, I go to open it, and it asks me what I should open it with. I'm not great with computers, so I have no idea. Please help, I've been looking for 3 hours and this has happened to me with other files I try to install.

What are your options to open it with? Is Winrar an option or 7zip(standard unpacking programs I use)
I tried to use winzip on it... Is that the same thing? I'm horrible at this kind of stuff...

What type of file is it?
I don't know, I clicked on properties to view what type of file, but it just says file... I don't see an extension on it, maybe I'm not doing it right.

Interesting.

I suggest you download winrar and try that.

It sounds like you either didn't save it with a file extension, or it didn't have one to begin with. Try downloading the patch from somewhere else.

Try WinRAR.

WinRAR [http://winrar.windownloads.net/?OVRAW=winrar&OVKEY=win%20rar&OVMTC=standard&OVADID=58727472012&OVKWID=435511049012&OVCAMPGID=8631867012&OVADGRPID=19037110400&OVNDID=ND1]

Then when it asks what program you want to open it with, select it from the list.
Now I'm having trouble downloading WinRar, my life is fail tonight

LOL.. YES!

I swear I have my family and friends come to me all the time with computer problems. Now if I tell them what to do, and they do exactly what I told them... it wont fix it.. But when I go to their house and raise one eyebrow at their box, it yields in submission and promises me personally it will never do it again.

I have installed and ran the game in the past, though it has been a couple years now. Im not familiar with any sort of requirement to run any patch to get the game to work. I mean hypothetically it should be put the disc in, follow onscreen instructions and viola~!

With mentions of things like Unofficial patch, and Winzip extraction this seems to be on the borderline of illegitimacy, which Im not condemning and I do respect would make the effort more complicated, but I wouldnt feel comfortable helping to troubleshoot something of that line in such a public way. If that is the case the only thing I could suggest is, check the source of the files, reread the readme files for instructions, or the source where the files originated from to get hints on how to do it. Also.. I still doubt you need an unoffical patch. I can honestly say ive never once patched any offline game ive played on a PC and never had a problem, with the exception of NWN which I patched in order to upload and download custom modules.

I inherited this sorcerous craft from my father. I charge 5 soul crystals an hour, if anyone's interested.

How on earth is a fanpatch bordering on illegitimacy? And how is it connected to Winzip?

OP: Are you sure you are getting the right patch? It should be from here [http://www.patches-scrolls.de/vampire_bloodlines.php], where it will download a .zip file, containing an installer, you should be able to open that with Winzip.

Not saying that it is.. just said with the context given it seemed like it might be. As it relates to basic installation and running of a game, how many times have you had to use a decompression tool to install a game. Keep in mind the OP stated he just installed it, and said he had to install an unoffical patch to run the game. Not that he needed the unoffical patch to run a custom mod.

Perhaps this is my fault, because I was distracted and took me a while to write my post. At that moment there was only one reply to the thread.

Alright, I fixed it, turned out when I downloaded the file, it forgot to add the .exe extension.

I'd also like to show my appreciation for dududf's help with the fixing of said file. So here's a cookie

Yes, FILE files are always missing their extensions. Its a ***** to fix in Vista and 7 because they both auto-hide the extensions of files.

you can turn it off, though. Open any folder, click on "tools -> view -> uncheck a box that says "hide file extensions for known file types". And hit apply to folders.
