I consider only playing the Trauma Center/Team franchises or the Persona series. There really the only good games by Atlus (In my Opinion)

If you have a Wii, then I recommend Trauma Team. It's probably the best entry in the Trauma Center series to date, and it's a lot easier to get into than any other entry because they toned down the difficulty. It also has 6 different stories and each of them play differently. It's actually kinda neat to see how all 6 of them intermingle.

The only noteworthy games made by Atlus are the SMT and Trauma Center series.
The first being rather obscure (aside from Persona) the latter being pretty unknown I can't blame you for never having played them.

I can really recommend SMT. Best to start with Devil Survivor or Persona, though I personally dislike Persona 3 and 4. 2 (both) is still one of my favorite games in the series.

I worship them.

Since they made demons souls and Odin Sphere.

The only 2 games you really need to play ever

But they didn't make either of those games, only published them in the US.

The Disgaea series, followed closely by Persona, are probably what Atlus is know best for. Disgaea was overly popularized because of its 'Anti-Hero Heros' Laharl and Etna, and had some fairly interesting parts of the combat that actually made it better, rather than needlessly complicated (except for the damn colored tiles crap). Besides that it was just another Final Fantasy Tactics clone, which the majority of Atlus' TBSRPGs (Turn Based Strategy RPGs) were. Having never played Persona I can't speak for it.

Atlus brings us a lot of games that might not have ever made it states side and have at least a slight understanding of what kind of games can pass/be successful in the west. I can give them kudos for that.

Bomberman, Guilty Gear, Ogre Battle.

Can't remember if Rule of Rose rocked or sucked in the end.
Bomberman is primarily developed by Hudson Soft - a few games in the series have been made by other developers. Atlus' involvement only extends to having published a small handful of them in North America.

Guilty Gear is Arc System Works. Atlus was just the North American publisher for the first game.

Ogre Battle is developed by Quest - Atlus was just the North American publisher for the PS1 port.

Rule of Rose was developed by Punchline. Once again, Atlus was just the North American publisher.

EDIT - And because people keep bringing them up:

Disgaea was made by Nippon Ichi. Demon's Souls was made by From Software. Odin Sphere was made by Vanillaware (though to be fare, several founders of Vanillaware previously worked at Atlus, where they worked on Odin Sphere's spiritual predecessor, Princess Crown). Snowboard Kids was made by Racjin (previously known as Racdym), except for the DS game, which was made by in-glove.

Atlus was just the North American publisher for all these games except the Snowboard Kids series, which Atlus publishes globally.

I've played a bunch of them, and they're (mostly) all really well crafted and made, and are almost always entertaining. You're right, tehy're story and gameplay driven.

My favorite series is the Persona series. and I'm guessing you are in the European market?
No I'm a 100% American, I'm 6'2 and have an awesome beard ^-^

I've been told to play a few Atlus games because of how hilarious they were, Disgaea in particular, and found them to be embarrassingly unfunny. Well, different strokes, I guess.
Despite my urge to shout heresy at the claim that Disgaea isn't funny, Atlus only published the first Disgaea in the US. The creator and publisher of all other Disgaea games is Nippon Ichi Software America, or NISA. The only series they're the developers for are the Shin Megami ones, Etrian Odyssey, and Trauma Center.

So you're full descended from the native american race? wow... impressive. XD Joking.

Anyway, wow. You realize you could pick up any of those games since most of atlus' stuff comes to the states, as I'm sure we'll get Catherine

I've only played Demons Souls and stopped there. I've found that Atlus has a huge problem understanding the difference between legitimate challenge and masochism.
Demon's Souls isn't really that hard. I've died more times on a Call Of Duty campaign then in Demon's Souls. It's only hard if you have shitty timing. The game itself is pretty damn easy. I have only one stage left and so far only 1 boss gave me the shits, which I beat on my second try anyway.
So there games arn't that hard then [Even though aparently they were only the publisher of demon souls]
Damn I was just about to dry clean my gimp suit :(

Masochism Wins ^-^

My opinion of the game aswell. I have completed it once, and I had a fun time, but since then I haven't felt much like touching it again.

Why? You can find any of the Persona games in the bargain bin for the PS2.
Do not have a PS2
*Struck by a bolt of genius!*
[Or common sense]
But our PS3 can play PS2 games!

i think Snowboard Kids was by Atlas and it was absolutely amazing. one of my favourite racing games
Haha, what a coincidence, as soon as I saw Atlus I also immediately thought of Snowboard Kids. I could not for the life of me beat that fucking japanese ninja (Shinobi) on the last track. That game had some cool music too, plus one of the female characters had huge tits for a 12 year old.
Sinobin was an arse to beat. he always seemed to have one of those invisibility items. only way i managed to beat him was to hope i got loads of ghosts near the end and prey he didn't have inadvisability as i overtook to shoot him. he was awesome when he was unlocked. think it was Linda who had the huge tits. it made things a tad weird. Quicksand Valley had the best theme tune. the second one wasn't a good
