Hello, fellow Escapists! If you've been here for a while, you've no doubt come across user "Jack and Calumon," who, in every post, without fail, contributes two opinions - his own, and that of Calumon, an adorable, somewhat moronic yet blissfully ignorant creature whose words, despite being simple, are somewhat heart-warming.

Having spent time talking with Jack, he has told me that this is of his own design. In an attempt to harshen the dark, often intimidating, side of life on the internet, and indeed on the Escapist, he has made it his mission to use this Calumon character as a thing to brighten up days. A way of expressing happiness even when happiness is not his to express. He wants to be able to shine a torch into the bright corners and fine the good side of everything, even if it has to be out of ignorance to do it - and I think he has succeeded in turning, every so often - but often enough to matter - this place from a wretched hive of scum and villainy, and into a nice, warm place.

So, this thread is for Jack. If you have ever had your day brightened by the antics of his Calumon character, or appreciate what he's trying (and succeeding) to do here... sign off in this thread. I think he deserves our gratitude, he and everyone on the Escapist who just wants to make our community a lot happier.

Fair enough, I've read a few of his posts, and they do come off quite warm hearted. It's especially appreciated on some of the more depressing topics.

Dude. He's just a guy. If you like 'im, PM 'im and tell 'im that; the thing is, most people wouldn't typically make an appreciation thread for another forum member, no matter how much they like 'em...

I mean, don't get me wrong, I like the guy too, he's one o' my bros, but that doesn't provide me with an incentive to regail him with praise, then make a thread asking others to do the same! It seems a wee bit silly! Assumin' I were to make an "Andy of Comix inc" thread, how would you feel about that? How d'you think other people'd feel? They'd tell me to quit bein' so fuckin' stupid; even if you had some really endearing gimmick on the forums, that wouldn't change the fact that you are, essentially, just another guy, and not one who needs his own "appreciation thread".

I just think he gives so much without asking for something back... that it would be nice for all of us to show him what he's done for this community. The fruit of his labours, so to speak.

I thought it would be a nice thing to do for him...

I don't find it funny in the slightest, I used to find it rather annoying but through years of rigorous Jedi training, I learned to ignore the Calumon aspects of his posts.

I can appreciate that others find it endearing, I just think it's childish. I'm not not trying to be offensive, but do we really need a thread like this?

Hero worship tends to happen a lot at the escapist for some reason.

I don't think we need any thread on anything. I do think he has taken it upon himself to brighten up people's day in this place that can so often be full of dank swaller. Just wanted to be able to say "thanks," but on a wide scale - show him that his goodwill is appreciated.

I guess it is childish, but that's the point!

He hasn't taken it upon himself to do anything. He's a kid with an imaginary friend. It's a gimmick.

That's not to say his opinion means any less than anyone else's, but if I suddenly started doing the same thing, people wouldn't think it was because I was trying to lighten up the forums, they'd think I was a bit of an attention seeker.

Though thankfully not quite as much as it used to, I think.

Jack & Calumon is good because it's unique; if other people started doing it I would probably start finding it annoying. Still, yay for Calumon!

Its fun but I never heard of a appreciation thread except on the muse forums.

Could be a nice forum on here for these types of threads.

People have done threads like this before. Most notably Asylum Open Mic did one with 'A Toast To...' which was basically just circle jerking each other. Threads congratulating someone get one of two things done; give some easy trolling, or make the person feel really cocky and inflate their ego.
Seeing as Jack isn't cocky, that just means all this thread achieves is giving people a place to ***** and troll. Threads congratulating someone is almost as annoying as those 'what members do you always see' in terms of how many trolls and ego-inflaters there are. You like them? Fine. Why then make a thread just to tell them that you like them in front of people who don't care?

Well, after talking to him, he said this was indeed his intention. That's what I'm saying. He has said that's why he did it, and speaking as a man with severe depression? I'd say it's a good thing. His posts cheer me up. Not much cheers me up anymore. That deserves appreciation.

It is his intention to "cheer the place up," he isn't doing it for laughs.

Because I know there are others that like him for the same reasons, and I thought it would be great to get us all in one place so he can see how well his "gimmick" has been working. I agree I probably am opening a can of worms on this one, but hopefully the sentiment is light-hearted and, dare I say, sincere enough that no-one pulls any genuine crap.

It's a pat on the back and a round of applause for a user who has lightened up a lot of people's days. I think that's worth its own thread, if not for others like him who also do the same thing of their own accord. Selflessness is a quality we all should admire, especially in places were self-entitlement is status quo.

So, if I bring the very real Sakura here, will that be a gimmick?

Or Kero for that matter? :p

OT: He is a bro for life, for numerous reasons. :p

Go Jack. :p

Just realized how pessimistic everyone on this site seems to be :\

OT: I didn't know what to think of it when I first started seeing his posts, but I've gotten used to it and think it was a pretty good idea on his part.
So, there would be my appreciation.
