Am I the only one (and yes, I realise I'm "never the only one", but you get the idea) who thinks, if the film adaptation of Watchmen had been made in the 80s or even the 90s, Jack Nicholson would've made a great Comedian? And I'm not just saying this because he played the Joker in Batman. It's because 1) he actually would've looked like the Comedian and 2) it does seem like a character archetype he was known for playing.

Yeah I guess. Personality wise he's a reasonable fit, but physically...I dunno. The Comedian struck me as a bit hulking, a bit thuggish, whereas Jack has always been a slightly built, reedy fellow.

Unfortunately, I believe an 80's Watchmen Comedian would have been played by an actual comedian turned muscle-guy, Joe Piscopo. Here he is, looking utterly ridiculous for some reason. Probably because it was the 80's and nothing more. Note how Betty Weider is trying not to get bronzer on her hands.
Stonewashed jeans. Yes, that makes sense.

Couldn't Nicholson train to bulk himself up, like many other method actors (e.g. what Christian Bale did to play Batman)? I just think Nicholson, with his trend of playing charismatic characters with a wild streak to them, would've fit the Comedian brilliantly.

I've never known Jack Nicholson to undergo significant physical changes as part of his method acting. That's more of a Bale/DeNiro thing.

True that. I don't know if he would definitely NOT do it or it just so happens that none of his roles ever needed much of a physical input.

I can see Chinatown-Nicholson in the role though.

I think this guy would be much better for the role. Hes not muscular but he is a big guy and has the personality of the comedian

I think Nicholson as The Comedian would turn out just like Nicholson as the Joker. In other words he'd do an awesome job and the performance would be awesome but it also wouldn't really be The Comedian. I love Nicholson's Joker, but that isn't the Joker, that's Jack Nicholson playing Jack Nicholson pretending to dress up as the Joker. He's just chewing the scenery in that role. That's not a knock again Nicholson, it's just that back then people didn't respect comic book movies. It was Batman (1989) that changed all that, without Burton's Batman we wouldn't have all the comic book movies we have today. So if they could have gotten Watchman made in the 80s, I think it would be the same, they'd get Nicholson and let him go wild because people like that. It would be entertaining but it wouldn't really be the character. Although Watchman is one book that didn't need a movie. I really like it, but it's too unfriendly to adapt properly, especially as a movie. The movie that we did get wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I even kind of liked it but all the nuance was lost, most of the character development was lost. Too many things had to be cut or changed. Not to mention that 2009 is a bit late to be making the movie, because Watchmen is a bit dated.

Yes, there were the Superman movies, but Superman is a cultural icon ingrained in the American conscious that goes far beyond comic books.

With Nicholson you'd likely have his charisma overshadow the role.

Honestly I think current Mel Gibson would be a better fit.
