Both Zero Punctuation and Extra Credit have touched on the idea of story vs gameplay, with ZP constanty tearing apart games for sacrifising one for the other and EC talking about how true storytelling in games needs to be done throughout.

Well this got me thinking of the Jak series, NOT X OR DAXTER!!!!!, The series probably has the most gameplay mechanics of all time... cars, skateboarding, bikes, planes, guns, melee, magical powers, character flight (wings), sandbox style and many more. With all of this in one game you would think it would be a mess of bad controls and story involving poor ways of including all of the mechanics, and well, the controls in Jak 2 were not perfect (hoverboard) the game put them together in such a way that they worked very well together.

Jak and Daxter is not as critically aclaimed as the Metal Gear or Final Fantasy series and i feel its unfair since i think it was an amazing feat of putting a lot of verety into a game and still having it work well together. Managing to have the 2 main characters be an elf and his hamster and still have me care about themas much as the characters in Heavy Rain. having me jump from joking with my hamster friend to epic vehicle sections then a gunfight and still be as immersive as Silent Hill 2.

In conclusion, The Jak series is unmatched in gaming history though my eyes.

Extra... maybe TL:DR

This story begins with a 14 year old boy going shopping with his parents and seeing a game on offer. The game is called 'Jak and Daxter' and looks to be a nice light hearted game similar to the Crash Bandicoot games he use to enjoy. He convinces his mom to let him have it and going home to play it and enjoy the adventures of 2 friends as they try to find a solution to the problem they have got into by playing with dark powers.

1 year later the boy notices that 'Jak 2' a sequel to the nice light hearted game he liked and with xmas getting close he gave some hints to his family about a possible present. A few days after receiving the game he sits down to enjoy the carefree asventures of Jak and Daxter. after the starting scenes of the game he realises that this may not be the case with Jak already falling victim to months of painfull experiments, as the game progresses Jak sways from vengance to heroism as he uses his powers for the greater good.

2 years after the boy got his hands on Jak and Daxter he heard of a third game release and after being hooked on the series after playing the first 2 buys the game on its release date. This time his favorit hero has been banished from the very town he saved due to his blind heroism started a revolution that needed someone to blame. After another great game with an unbelievably immersive story like the game ends tying up all the loose ends and giving the boy his favorite game series of all time.

8 years later the boy is now a 22year old man single and bored posting on forums :)

Its upsetting that the vehicle controls have completely stopped me from finishing 2 and buying 3. It was a wonderful series and even the first game sits in a warm spot in my heart.

We need more games like the Jak series.
