James Gandolfini passed away some hours ago from a heart attack at 51 years old in Rome.

What you gonna do?

EDIT: Frankly I was too disheartened by the news to make any witticisms regarding his role as Tony Soprano or elaborate statements regarding life, death and young age. It's the morning after though and James Gandolfini is still dead.

I watched all of The Sopranos - 6 seasons consisting of 86 episodes, clocking at 45-60 minutes each, made over the course of 8 years - in just over a few months. I spent maybe the latter half of 2012 watching all of it. It quickly pushed back every TV show I had ever watched to another slot. He led without being the leading type. He was charming in charmless roles. That's versatility for you. I'll miss the guy.

It was sad to hear. I love The Sopranos and he was an amazing actor in it.
I was shocked that he was so young too! I thought he would have been early 60s by now.

Maybe he'll return as Gandolfini the White though...

By the way, his last movie is currently in post-production, which is bittersweet, because even though it will be the last we see of his performances, it will also keep Burt Wonderstone from being his last appearance. Not a good note to end on.

OT: As usual with any death, celebrity or not, I wish the best for the family and those who truly knew him.

I'm surprised and shocked, but at the same time I'm not. Just hearing the guy breath felt smothering.

Oh fuck, why did you have to say that? Now I won't be able to stop thinking about how awesome that would be.

I am not surprised that the cause of death is a heart attack.
My father died at 56 for a heart attack too so I can relate.

BWAHAHAHAH. Oh dear.

In retrospect, you'd think everyone would be saying that, but not heard that one yet.

RIP Tony Soprano, only the good die young. =(

Seriously though, I didn't believe it at first. There was more than one site which said that it was a hoax, and someone even claimed they had been the ones to stage it. I've been watching The Sopranos for the first time, and was only at the beginning of the third season when he died. I watched an episode shortly after I read about it. I'll miss him, but I still have The Sopranos at least.

Terrible loss, he was a fantastic actor. Not just as Tony Soprano, but also when doing smaller parts in films like True Romance and Killing them Softly. Also 51 is just way too young.

This really bummed me out. Tony Soprano might be the greatest single performance in television history. The guy was an iconic actor. We could and should have been watching him for twenty, thirty more years.

RIP James.

Put me down as hopeful for Gandolfini the White as well.

Conserve! Really though, The Sopranos is one the best TV shows that I've ever seen and Gandolfini really lived that character, to the point where it's almost kind of surreal watching him play something else like with In the Loop or Cinema Verite, you always have that association in the back of your mind but I think that just serves as a testament to his versatility. It's a shame he's gone, I'll have to look into some of his other roles, in particular it's a crime that I still haven't seen True Romance. We'll miss ya T.

Gandolfini's death is kind of a big deal for me. My family LOVED The Sopranos when it aired on TV. My dad got to see him on Broadway, and while he didn't care for the play itself he did say Gandolfini was the best part about it. I took a TV in pop culture class in college and we dedicated an entire class day to the show, just talking about the actors, how much work went into it, discussing how Italian mobsters were being portrayed in a modern setting, and all the news it made throughout its run, especially with the ending. It was awesome, by far one of my favorite classes I ever took.

He was a fantastic actor and it's sad to see him pass at 51. My condolences go out to his friends and family.

I'll be honest, I didn't watch that much of the Sopranos (When they were reruns on A&E did I watch them, since my family didn't have HBO), but his role in Where The Wild Things Are was amazing to watch. I was moved by his role in that movie, of course, that movie was just wonderful, but it was his performance that made it amazing.

He played great roles, I really wish he could have been in more, much more. Still, to honor his career by watching his good movies (I think most, if not all of them were pretty good) seems quite fitting.

To his family, I only have good wishes and respect.
