Now, I ain't talkin' "Graaargh!!" *Noob who flails violently on the controller while playing a fighting game, merely mashing buttons*

No, I'm talking about games where, in many cases, it's critical to your survival, and victory.

A grand example (that I know of) would be Star Wars Bounty Hunter; true, you could just hold down the fire button...or you could mash it like a madman and unleash an absolute firestorm of blaster bolts.

Moments in the game when it makes the difference between life and death? The entire section in Ovoo IV, and whenever you face the Bando Gora...actually, it's just a good idea to lay down a wall of blaster bolts throughout the entire game, besides, it's fun!

Anyway, anyone have some moments they'd like to share?

Instead of mashing the "A" button try gently rubbing your finger against it. It helps, try it...

Seriously, not ever?

Aaah, while this may be easier on my hand and the controller, is it as fun?

Any of the Devil May Cry games spring to mind here, smashing square as fast as you can, trying desperately to get that one extra shot in like it would make some sort of difference.

Any of the Mario Party games (excluding the first with it's joystick wrecking spinning mini games) make you mash a or b (or both) to win.

Starfox Adventures. There's a bit where you have to hammer A to puch some dino into a hole.

MGS: Twin Snakes. Survive Ocelot's torture.

'B' seems to be (no pun intended) the QTE bashy button of choice these days... F.E.A.R. 2 and Gears 2 both had it.

Sounds like some advice a ladyfriend gave me many years ago...

You have to pound the "X" button like a freak of nature to even hope to win the QTE's in Prince of Persia. I usually fail those...

I seem to remember some track and field games for the NES where rapid button mashing was basically the entire game.

Regional language note: here in the southeastern United States, "to mash" means "to hold or press down on" rather than "press repeatedly." I remember years ago when I had my first driver's ed lesson and the teacher told me to "mash the brake" when I came to the stop sign. Not being a native southerner, I was very confused. I imagine if you told some of my neighbors to "mash the A button," they would just hold it down, and thus fail at many a quick time event.

Any FPS + Melee weapon = X button mashing.
Though I find that a controller with a turbo toggle helps :)

Thanks for the language tip.

Pah, cheating!

Back on topic, I've often found that I tend to get into a rhythm with FPSs while in CQC.

The Dino's laugh... "Huh-huhh!!" whenever he'd win, it merely incensed me tap the "A" button faster the next round.

That's the thing, though, that last shot does make all the difference.

As for Mario Party, that game and I have a love/hate relationship. Physical pain was involved...

The later levels explain it better than I could.
I'll have to try this out.

I believe there's many Kingdom Hearts 2 parts where you have to repeatedly mash X.

For example, and SPOILERS AHEAD IF YOU CARE! the fact that you have to dance and sing to defeat ursula (sp?) is completely beyond me. Man I hate Ariel and Sora's voice. Oh and the boss fight mainly consists of mashing X at the right time.

Those were my favorite sections in the game. Omg, and I loved the last level (forgot what it was called). I mean sure, it was hard as hell, but it was fun too. Literally mowing down zombie people, jumping from high place to high place with my jetpack. Ah, the memories. There needs to be another game that lets you play as Jango Fett.

Damn... I just watched some gameplay of Bounty Hunter on Youtube and I want to play it right now. Hm...

I'd buy it in a heart beat.

That game had a lot of errors in it, and lack of animations with some attacks (Infinite uppercut, anyone?), but it was still fun, the story wasn't half bad either.

...What? Dance and sing to defeat Ursula? I'm so glad I stayed away from the Kingdom Hearts series...
