- "...before running down the line slapping..." - I wonder if this in a expression, or if he literally ran down the line, that'd be hilarious.

I feel bad for the teacher. In Japanese schools these days teachers have very little power in the classroom and most attempts at discipline result in a phonecall from angry parents or being forced to apologise to the school board. Kids are growing up more rotton and spoiled year after year and no-one is doing anything to stop it.

It is obvious that the teacher snapped and I do not think his actions were appropriate. But people in this profession need more support and less judgement.

Bring back real discipline into the classrooms and give teachers the respect they deserve.

A good sharp spanking does a lot less damage than pandering to children`s every desire. This story illustrates a much bigger problem in education today.

Because their fifth grade students it is kinda unecessary but it would be hilarious if they were a little older. Also according to the article, no one was injured so no harm done really.

While I agree he might have been a little excessive, what he did wasn't that bad. Some of you people make it sound like he actually harmed them. A little bit of corporal punishment can do wonders.

This is messed up. On one hand, the teacher has a lot to deal with. On the other, the Japanese education system is very strict and filled with pressure.

Can anyone really be blamed?

How pathetic! No one knows how to control kids and are not willing to learn how it seems.

1. Why are you using Thudermisers Avatar of the relic boards?
2. So? We need to get back to corporal punishment, then push for capital.
Thudermisers Avatar of the wha? Who are you talking to?
Curses. I was hoping to identify a guy I know of different boards, Just ignore me then :)

41 kids and not one of them decided to move out of the way? Sorry I don't let teachers swing at me.

Personally I think that's awesome, if only someone had got it on tape.

He deserves to be punished, you shouldn't hit children, but still...

While this is certainly not a funny story, I'm a little surprised that the students further down the line didn't just take a few steps back when they saw the nutter running down the line with his hand out.
Sorry, I'm in a silly mood.

i bet it was just a little slap as a demonstration rather than with intent to hurt them. although, I'm surprised they didn't just mob him. that would probably have happened at my school...the teachers and students had a lot of respect for each other, but when somebody was out of line(sorry, bad pun), both teachers and students alike would but them in their place.

Finally Japan did something right. I would love to see a slow motion video of that guy running down the line, slapping the kids with that tune from Chariots of fire playing.
