It's not a Japanese thing, it's because it's on the Nintendo channel, which they treat with Kiddy gloves. I'm sure there's a proper trailer somewhere.

Is it though?

Japan gets quite strict when it comes to videogame violence. You look at the japanese version of The Last of Us and the violence is heavily censored, even to the point where some of the cutscenes are altered. Same with Until Dawn. I think Resident Evil 4 got censored too, with its decapitation animations. Which is weird to think that games Japan makes themselves will have features removed for release in their own country.

It only seems to regard violence toward humans though, so I don't know how this'll impact Doom, but this isn't just a Nintendo thing.

That seems so weird considering other media including lots of anime and movies like Battle Royale, which to me is something that couldn't have been made in the US because of the violence.

It's either just a videogame thing or Japan has gotten more sensitive about these things. Anime really isn't as hard-edged anymore, and porn seems to have always been censored there.

But as I said, it only seems to regard violence toward people. In The Last of Us they'll show zombies getting their heads blown up, but humans... nope.

Japanese seem to be phobic about violence, Westerners seem to be phobic about sex.

Funny ol world ain't it?

It seemed so weird, every time something was about to hit something else it just cut away.

There is no way to clean up the latest doom game and you shouldn't try, you see the daemons and the levels and you know what you'll be getting from the game and thats violence.

Isn't it mainly a dismemberment thing and that they cant show it in japan? There was that altered scene from Re7, where a severed head with a note was replaced with a photograph, and they took out the elbow-deep scene where you get the key.

Considering their long and brutal history of violence, who can blame them. If they won WWII, who knows how different things would be. Maybe it would be US with the censorship.

Fallout 4 in Japan is the same as the worldwide version, with dismemberment and decapitation of humans.

It's just that CERO refuses to rate games that has gore being cruel and brutal because it violates their standards. Dismemberment and decapitation is still allowed, provided the reviewers aren't too disturbed by it.

But for pc games, they don't have to have a rating to be sold, but only conform to retailer standards.

I don't know, many Japanese games seem to be ok with violence. This seems like an issue only the Nintendo Switch has to deal with...

So they basically have a couple of assigned people look at violent content, and based on whether they're disturbed by it they censor it?

I'm willing to bet it's because the trailer was originally shown in a Nintendo Direct, which also features advertisements for stuff like Yokai Watch and which a bunch of kids watch.

Right, CERO has a list of content that is not allowed in their code of ethics. You can google it if you're bored.

Also, CERO actually plays those games before they rate it, unlike the ESRB, who just asks for the company to fill out a survey and threatens that said companies better not be lying because they will play the game, eventually.

Germany was much the same about 10 years ago. Being a video game enthusiast in Germany was a pretty frustrating experience, having to rely on imports if you wanted the uncut versions of games. We've gotten a lot more relaxed about these things now but I am a little bit dissapointed to see that Japan, a country that actually has a video game industry worth mentioning, is so backwards when it comes to one of their own cultural exports.
